  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Delayed reaction to VHD vaccination?

Muppet2

Alpha Buck
Last year when Muppet had his VHD jab, he was feeling ill pretty much straight away but was OK later on.

He had his booster yesterday at 10.00 and seemed fine all day - ate and poo'd happily. He was a bit quieter in the evening but sometimes he is, so I didnt think anything of it. He snoozed on the sofa and just seemed in the mood for being stroked.

When I came down this morning though, he'd not eaten his bedtime veg (from 23.30) - and he must be feeling bad to ignore carrot! Today he's been quiet but responsive when I've been over to speak to him. He didnt eat his breakfast his pellets but is picking at hay and ate some carrot. Poos are small but still coming.

Is this a delayed reaction to the VHD jab? I expected any reaction much sooner and this seems to have started about 8 to 12 hours after.

It is likely to be a reaction to the Vaccine. I would call your Vet, explain what has happened and ask them to record it on Muppets clinical notes.
Try to tempt him to eat more and encourage a good fluid intake. If he is still off his food tomorrow then he may need to be examined by your Vet. But hopefully he should be back to normal within 24 hours

Thanks Jane, will ring the vets as you suggest.

He's eaten more (his breakfast pellets have disappeared and he's nibbling on a spring green leaf now) so appears to be heading in the 'feeling better' direction :D
