  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ear abscess

Our vet has just called and she has heard back from the rabbit specialist at the rabbit welfare association. He has said that with the problem that Leroy has they normally have a head tilt first so as at this point he hasn’t got it he shouldn’t get it. He has said without surgery he will get worse but couldn’t give a timescale and because of his age has recommended ct scans and surgery. The other option we just manage it and keep him comfortable as long as possible. She is going to find someone local who can do the ct scan and the op at the same time and find out costs. He is insured up to 2000 per policy year. So hopefully his insurance will cover this. I have no idea how much a ct scan is.

Has any body any experience with abscesses in the ear
dear tom leroy51,-rabbits unfortunately do not come with pet insurance, but before any problems start look into it.-that is the only time that I am aware of whereas it is possible,--after the fact when there is a problem-I think of car insurance after an accident-wrong time to cover the damages.-what you are seeking is pet insurance to cover preexisting conditions--I-[myself] cannot find any insurance to cover the bill.--the immune system [rabbits]-must be kept strong-proper diet-[probotics]-grasses,grasses,grasses,some-quality- pellets-for actual digestible food, vitamins, and water..-rabbits are prone to abscesses-some are visible, some are not-,one of my rabbits had mouth, gum line abscess,-I used an antibiotic [chloramphenicol]-and metacam-[pain]-took about 6 wks [gone],--but you need to consult an exotic dvm for guidance.--sincerely james waller from the other kent-usa

My Finley had ear base abscesses in both ears , a CT scan is needed to decide the best treatment he required surgery and it was expensive and quickly maxed out his insurance I don't regret it for a second though, and he made a reasonable recovery as for EC it's important as Jane said to treat for 28 days and bleach environment I hope your bunny improves

Hi how much did your treatment cost leroy has only one affected ear, he is insured up to 2k per policy year. we are treating for ec with panacur too

It was a few years ago but the surgery itself was £1500 and that was after all the initial investigation, although to be honest the surgery wasn't all that available at the time I remember when I was discussing it with my vet that it was pretty pioneering because about 6 years ago trying to find a savvy vet or even a vet willing to refer was difficult, costs may have come down as more vets have learned the technique I hope all goes well

Edit to say in total for both ears it cost over £3000
