Please Note - Medical Advice
Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.
You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.
We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.
Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.
Hello everyone,
I have an update. Sonya was amazing. She is the best vet I have ever spoken with. Her knowledge and competence was so impressive.
She said that Plumpkin has the worst teeth she has ever seen, hands down. She said there is very little chance that we can do anything for her but that a CT scan will give us closure. It is highly likely that she will have to be PTS. Sonya said that even after two weeks, there are more spurs digging into her mouth.
We have left for a couple of hours while the scan happens. OH and I have had a good cry. Sonya said that Plumpkin would definiely be dead by now if it weren't for us.
I'm trying to focus on the positives. She got to feel our love and the love of two other bunnies. She got to run around and sunbathe. She got to try tasty brambles and coriander.
I'm preparing myself for the worst because I need to be ready if it comes.
Thank you everyone for your kind words.
We are on the train home now - probably won't get back until 5.30. It has been an extremely long and exhausting day.
Plumpkin has had a full dental on top of everything else. She has a pink bandage on her ear from the catheter which looks adorable.
We now have to wait a couple of days to hear from Sonya about CT scan results.
I'll type up the full report we were given on her condition earlier if anyone might be interested.
Right now we're just thinking to make the most of our time with her.
Honestly, I wasn't really expecting things to take this turn. I knew the situation in her mouth was grim but it is so much worse than we imagined. She had rotting matter in her mouth which had to be flushed out.
I really appreciate having this support on the forum. It means the world to me.
We just got off the phone with the specialist. CT scan is extremely bleak. Her teeth have pushed into her nasal cavity, she has extra teeth growing under old teeth pushing them upwards. Her enamel has completely gone - vet says she has never ever seen this on a rabbit before. It is extremely bad.
We will be saying goodbye these next couple of days. We are both crying on the train of course.
I know that Plumpkin touched everyone's hearts on here. Thank you so much for your support.
