Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Red wee

Colly

Warren Scout
Hi all, I have just found a some wee next to Obi's litter tray, he obviously missed the tray and it went over the side...anyway it's very red...and although I understand this can be normal, he hasn't had any carrot...or spinach, just his green grass hay, pellets and a little bit of alfalfa (because he loves it so much). Hopefully that's all ok....I need to take him to the vets as he's got quite a messy bottom and he won't let me clean him up....so I guess I could ask them to feel his tummy...he's eating and drinking fine, I would say he is drinking quite a lot at the moment and seems to be doing a lot of weeing....again hoping this is ok....sorry for long post....but every time I see that reddish wee I panic a bit! :?

Are there any bits in his wee, or just a different colour. Just a different colour is normal, it does look scary, but can happen and I remember calling the vet when I first spotted it with my girl years ago, and she told me it's normal unless there are actually bits in it, like clearish with red blobs in it.

if he's dirty aswell then that could be a cysitis sign. he could be drinking more to try and flush out his own bladder. i'd see what the vet thinks. the colour could be nothing to worry about, but with the other signs, i'd be concerned about possible cysitis/uti :)

Dab some tissue paper in the wee. If it turns orange then it's fine. If it's blood red then I would go to the vets, taking the tissue paper with you.
