Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

We have diarrhoea- don't know what else to do

Sky-O

Wise Old Thumper
Lightning has dental abscesses and is on Metronidazole and Baytril for these. Previously he was on Crystapen. I can't take him off them because every time I do, he needs a dental and they flare up. He is on Metacam for arthritis (and probably dental pain). He has thymoma and is on Piriton and is nebulised. He eats on Protexin Profibre pellets with vast amounts of hay. He recently had a dental and doesn't need another one.

He has major diarrhoea, sadly. I'm unsure with what. It's a brown liquid, but he produces good fecals and also good caecoptrophs. But, equally, brown liquid too. He's been doing it on and off since August, but it's really bad at the moment (since he started needing and going in the nebuliser). He's not his normal springy self at food times, but that is because it's nebuliser/Piriton time- he's very bouncy for food at all other times.

His wifey bun has cranberry laced water due to a rubbish bladder and needing increased fluid intake- he obviously drinks this, but I can't change this to any thing else, or it's going to harm her.

I don't know what to do. I know that probably the sugar, the anti-bios, the stress and also his major moult are all contributory factors but, any ideas for anything else I can do?

Thanks in advance.

Gosh, poor chap. When you say it's diarrhoea do you mean true diarrhoea or is it more that he's passing brown coloured fluid aswell as 'normal' fecal pellets ?

The latter. Liquid and normal too. Doesn't smell either. Not at all. Definitely poo.

Other than piriton and nebuliser time he's as bright as they come. You'd never know he had so much going on. I wouldn't hesitate to let him go if I felt that was right but he's really bright in himself, especially now the weather is warmer.

The times when I have seen something similar it has been with Rabbits who's Liver function is not great. But as you say he is really bright within himself that seems unlikely. Would a blood test be an option ? Or is he a stress head ?

It wouldn't be a surprise if there was something else going on Jane. He's lost a bit of weight but more than that, when she examined him last week he had a reaction on abdominal palpation but it was non repeatable. Wouldn't be a surprise if that was something, to be honest. A blood test may be feasible, however, he is stresshead and his breathing is dire- I'm worried it would kill him.

I've seen other bunnies with liver failure still very bright until right at the end so I definitely wouldn't rule it out.

Presuming it's that, is there anything I can do, milk thistle?

I have used MT for several Rabbits with compromised Liver Function. C advised me to use it. There is also Samylin, but it is meat flavoured
