  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit savvy vet help

Whereabouts are you sillyrabbit? I can give you information from the RWAF vet list. These vets have had to satisfy our own vet Richard Saunders as to their capabilities with rabbits in order to get onto the list.

Regarding specialists, Frances Harcourt-Brown is no longer the only one, there are about 12 in the UK currently Richard is one of them. He teaches at Bristol Vet School, works at Bristol Zoo and also is a referral vet in a large Bristol practice.

Im in the Channel Islands, I doubt any of them are here, but thanks anyways!

Oh I didn't know that either. What specialist title do they have? I was same as Joey&Boo and thought that FHB was the only RCVS Specialist in Rabbit Medicine and Surgery, therefore the only recognised specialist. Fantastic that there are about 12, I thought that there would only be about 5 or 6! Really good that were are getting more specialists to call upon especially given Frances' status of 'retired' (if indeed she is!!)

If anybody wants info from the RWAF list please contact us. It's available to all. It isn't online yet but will be in the form of an interactive map when our new website is launched. Meanwhile please email me at hq@rabbitwelfare.co.uk or else phone the helpline 0844 324 6090 (local rate from landlines, mobile providers will charge more) between 11am and 3pm Monday - Friday. In order to be included in the list, vets must give satisfactory responses to a questionnaire, compiled and assessed by our vet Richard Saunders. They must re-apply each year as vets move on and we don't want to tell people to see a named vet who left the practice 3 years ago and hasn't been replaced by a new rabbit savvy vet. All vets on the list also have access to Richard for advice for any tricky cases, they receive a quarterly clinical newsletter to keep them up to date and they also get sizeable discounts for our Conferences so that we know there is top quality training available to them
