  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What's happened to his face?

Sending lots of vibes for Theo's dental today. I hope the vet manages to get x-rays done at the same time.

Hi all, Theo is home! Has his teeth done and X-rays too...X-rays all clear. He has a nasal infection too which she took swabs off. Trying baytril to see if that works before we send it off to be tested. Booked back in for appointment on Wednesday so fingers crossed his nose will be better by then. Thanks for everyone's positive vibes, I've been worried sick all day!

I hope that he will recover well overnight and I'm glad the Xrays were all OK. Hopefully his snotty nose will respond to treatment either with the Baytril or another antibiotic x

Good to hear that he came through OK, and I hope he feels even better overnight and tomorrow :)

Hopefully the baytril will combat the nasal infection, but I'm sure your vet will have other ideas up his sleeve if not!

Can I give metacam and baytril at the same time in the same syringe? I need to give both twice a day!

Always use a separate, clean syringe each time and draw different meds up in different syringes - otherwise you risk cross-contamination of both bottles. It is common to get bubbles in a 1ml syringe as you draw it up, so you sometimes need a couple of goes to get rid of the bubbles and get an accurate amount. You can draw them us so they are ready to use at the same time and just squirt them in through the side of the mouth straight after each other. Metacam tastes much nicer than baytril, so I tend to give it last. Then rinse out the syringes ready for next time.

That's great thanks, I was thinking it'd be difficult to get both in the same one so makes sense to have them both ready to use! I just wanted to double check that they could be given one after the other as I didn't ask at the vets!

If taste is an issue, I draw up the Baytril (the horrid tasting one) and then fill up the syringe with a bit of organic baby food. Yum :)

Finally got him to eat a bit of food so I can attempt to get some sleep! Night all...thank you for your continued support! It really is appreciated :D

He's had some broccoli this morning and he's moved to his hay box but hasn't eaten any yet. Still seems quiet so hopefully he'll be hopping around when I get home from work

Hi all, another update on Theo...he has been on baytril for 10 days and still has discharge from his nose. Been back to the vets today and we're sending his swabs off to be tested. Hopefully that will put us on the right course of treatment. My concern is if the swab comes back inconclusive as the vet said she would need to send me to a specialist :( really hoping it doesn't come to that.

Thanks for updating :D

I hope you get a conclusive result from the swab.

Otherwise I guess your vet could change the antibiotic?
