Wise Old Thumper
A thread about strange things our rabbits have done.

I've got two things I'd love to understand better

Last year when Rudey was on his last legs Mousey used to try & cover his legs with blankeys:? There were times when she'd nudge one of us & then do it as if to get our attention. In the last few days she intentionally peed on his legs

My next is when Joey was with one eyed Noodle. One time he bit off every whisker on one side of her face. It drives me nuts that I can't remember if it was on her seeing side or not:lol:
as I'm sure that would be key in fathoming it out

That is some puzzling behaviour, yes. I guess maybe Mousey wanted Rudey to be warmer? Peeing on his legs certainly is a way to accomplish that... :?

And that was not very nice of Joey! Being half-blind, she must've relied on her whiskers even more than seeing bunnies do, and here Joey comes and bites them off on one side! That's so strange... I have no idea why he would've done that.

Ohh I'd not considered the warmth thing.

Yeah its hard to rationalise Joeys whisker chopping - sounds like domestic violence to me. Or maybe he really is just very dim indeed

It was a rather mean thing to do! But maybe he just doesn't understand, yeah.

I have to admit I have no idea why Joey did that!

One I've just thought of is really lovely looking back on it now. Snoopy and Peanut Butter were bonded but didn't really snuggle a lot together. Peanut Butter was suffering with abscesses in both ears for most of the six months he was here. In the week before he passed the boys suddenly started snuggling up together a lot. Snoopy would also groom his ears a lot. And Snoopy is a very reluctant groomer.

I think that Snoopy knew Peanut Butter didn't have long left and was really taking care of his friend in his final days. It's funny that it was done in a way humans can understand and relate to. Especially as the way bunnies can behave towards their sick friends can be pretty unfathomable to us.

That's so lovely Scraps, good boy Snoops, we're proud of what you've done before & trust you to again

Tis strange how differently they can react to their friends illness

Aw, that's so lovely. What a sweet boy. That must've been a real comfort to Peanut Butter, having Snoopy care for him and be there for him like that.

When Tom got sick with an abscess Sophie got really vicious toward him. She'd attack him, and needless to say, their bond bond broke and I had to split them up. Tom got really down while he was already having such a hard time with vet visits at a specialist vet hours away (so, lots of travelling) and surgery. It was heartbreaking, and makes me worry that Sophie might act like that again if Casper ever gets very sick. While I understand that some bunnies want to distance themselves from sick ones as a way to protect themselves, it's really upsetting to see.

On a happier note, here's some strange behaviour: I was sitting on my balcony yesterday and Casper was with me, binkying about, so I thought he might like a treat and offered him a leaf from my mint plant, which he hasn't had before. He came over to check it out and then ran inside at super speed, thumping all the way. He must've not liked the smell?

It’s so interesting to read about their behaviour! One of my half wild bunnies, Dandy, once took a piece of vetbed down 8ft of runaround tunnel into the run, and then humped it

That must have been really upsetting for you. i really hope joey is nice to Boo is she gets poorly & needs him - if they are ill they can be distant but so far, no nastiness

Casper  its nothing bad . Mine had to learn to love mint. My neighbour gives us massive bundles in summer & at first it only got eaten when everything else had gone. They do enjoy it now, its not their favourite. The room smells amazing when they've just eaten it though. What did Sophie say?

It was funny

 Thankyou  this story or another one?

My first goats were terrified of me wearing gardening gloves. Ran off looking all spooked until I took them off

Pumpkin (Charlie and Lola’s dad) once snook past me into the house. Ran all the way through our long thin house to the end, then just turned round and ran straight back out again  I had visions of him jumping onto the settees or knocking the television over or something

If the goats are in the garden, Pickle keeps ramming the glass in the back door with her horns  I’m not sure what the fascination is because I’m sure she wouldn’t want to come in

Sorry I’ve had so many pets and so many funny things happen I’ve rambled on

No, don't stop. Other peoples funny pet stories are the best.

My fave of yours was your doggies that escaped the B&B you were staying in & rounded up the local sheep

 I was just going to add that one on but I’d blathered on already:lol: yes, the dogs were in the garage at the b&b and we had nipped out to the shops. Next minute my phone rang and the lady at the b&b said she had accidentally let them out  she had got the gsd back but the border collie was rounding up the sheep  by the time we got back they (the dogs) were safe

I second J&B I am loving your tales.

Zoobec, your stories are so funny. They've really made me laugh.

Yes, it was. I'm glad there has never been any nastiness between Joey and Boo when they're ill. Most bunnies I've known become distant from their ill friends, but aside from Sophie, they've always been okay, so hopefully it'll be like that for Joey and Boo, too, if Boo ever gets poorly.

I guess mint must have a very strong taste? I'm glad they enjoy it now. Sophie ate the leaf Casper didn't want after some sniffing, which is funny because normally Sophie is the one who is very distrustful of new food. I always think the room smells so nice after they've had fresh basil, so mint must be really nice as well!
