  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Weight loss and small poos

Sending loads of vibes for Lola. I hope she recovers well from her op and that you can establish a diet, which will help her.

Spot on Jane, thank you, that's it. Someone has replaced my brain with cotton wool today, apologies.

I will discuss diet and prebiotics with my vet this evening.

Frances Harcourt Brown (retired) rabbit specialist vet is of the opinion that probiotics and PREBIOTICS are of no use to a rabbit because of the acidity of the stomach acid. However they will not harm :)

Hope your vet has ideas on diet :)

This conversation alone disproves that theory ;)

I think there may be a few people who beg to differ ;)

It was Mark Rowland an Exotics Specialist Vet who recommended the Avipro. I think he also recommended it to cpayne for Doughnut's chronic gut problem :)

Well, I mentioned the prebiotics to my vet and she thought it didn't hurt to try it so we will. Diet wise we discussed feeding Lola separately twice daily and feeding different hays, forage, veggies etc more or less really how I normally feed. We didn't think cutting out pellets was the best plan as her poos aren't too bad either too dry or too wet.

Overnight she's not been great but she's nibbled some coriander this morning so I've shut her in the crate on her own with some coriander and parsley otherwise her husbun scoffs it. He's being very good with her and just wants to give her snuggles.

Meds wise I've been given oral vetergesic and injectable metoclopramide, baytril and metacam and I have to call with an update today. She wants to see her if she needs something but otherwise wants her to stay with me to reduce stress as much as possible.

I expect that the Vet mentioned that if Metoclop' and Vetergesic are given together the sedating effect of Vetergesic can be increased quite significantly. Does your Vet think adding Ranitidine might be useful ? It has prokinetic effects on the lower GI tract where-as Metoclop' acts on the upper GI tract. Ranitidine also acts as an anti GI ulcer med which can be useful when a Bun is not eating too well.

I hope that Lola improves throughout the day xx

I agree, staying with you is the best plan, the poor wee mite

I'm glad you're vet has found a regime for her and I take my hat off to you managing it all.

Good luck xx

Sorry for the lack of reply. I've been asleep a lot today as i'm a bit under the weather.

Lola's doing really well. After just nibbling food this morning about lunchtime she was up and about so I tried her on some pellets then a load of stuff from the garden, some forage mix and veggies this evening. She's continued do well all day and has been hopping about quite a lot.

Thanks for the suggestion of Ranitidine, I will mention it. I only have 1 more dose left of vetergesic and metaclop as we are going to discuss meds again in the morning.

I'm actually quite surprised how quickly she's recovered if i'm honest.

I'm glad to hear she's doing pretty well all things considered.

You just need to get yourself well now :D

Just thought I'd update for anyone interested. We sent off a liver sample for analysis and that came back normal. Iain Cope has no further suggestions as to what it could be but Lola is doing really well and put back on most of what she lost. Being a house bunny is certainly suiting her.

I am glad that Lola is doing so well even though the mystery of her illness remains unsolved xx
