  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

U/D Vibes please :( Poor Tao : ( back from vets...

I agree with Jane - it does look like a burn from a chemical :( I would apply a thin smear of the fuciderm (make sure you don't overdo it as it has steriod in)

Hmmmmm and a steroid is not the best thing to put on a burn (if the wound is, infact, a burn) :?

Perhaps FLAMAZINE Cream might be better :?

Paddy was given that when he overgroomed himself and he just ended up licking it off and half of his fur at the same time making it worse so just keep an eye out!! Hope all is well.

oh no :( this is exactly what she is doing :( lick lick lick, I've not been back on for a while because I've been sitting with her on the sofa all arvo just to stop her licking it :( whats this about socks? I can't see how to stop her doing it, I assume a "lampshade" doesnt work for bunnies as they probably just panic about it. and I thought of trying to do a full, figure of eight style bandage on her but dont know how I would and if it would work or just stress her/stop the wound getting air :?

her vhd vaxi was on thursday at 2.15pm I'll go and feel her neck now for any inflamation.

whats this about vaseline to stop her licking? I've never had a bunny with a wound before so I will appreciate any advice on this one. Thank you :)

edit: I can't feel anything really obvious, it feels like the area on top of the right shoulder above her injury is slightly denser, like there might be swelling on that side but it may be my overwrought imagination :?

How could I tell? I don't think the vet would admit liability if this was caused by vhd chemical burn and the vet who saw her today was a different one from on thursday anyway.

should I take her to a different vet for a second oppinion?

I just want her better

*THIS IS A 100% UNQUALIFIED OPINION*

Personally I would not use Fuciderm on the wound
I would not apply anything to it at all and would express my concerns re a *possible* VHD Vaccination mishap to the Vet ASAP.
I would request systemic anti-inflammatories (Metacam) and Flamazine Cream (prescription med) to apply topicaly.

But I am only a fellow Bunny Mummy, not a Vet

thanks Jane :)

I must admit I'm starting to feel slightly uneasy about this vets.

They've always looked after our animals but I've been blessed with healthy rabbits up til this point so not had to test their knowledge of lagomorphs.

The vet who gave me the panacur gave me the stuff for dogs and it was only when I took it back with me on thursday so that the vet could help me administer it that the other vet said "oh, didn't he give you the rabbit one? here let me swap it" and gave me the rabbit one and explained about giving it for 9 days in a row to help prevent e.c

should I be looking for someone who is a rabbit specialist in future :?

I will phone first thing on monday and try and talk to them about this.

in fact I'll obviously try tomorrow but I don't have much faith in reaching anyone helpful :(

Dont worry re the Panacur, the Liquid is perfectly OK to administer and contains exactly the same active ingredient (Fenbendazole) as the Panacur Rabbit. I use the 10% Panacur Liquid for my Buns as its far more economical

As you have previously found your Vet to be OK dont shoot them down in flames just yet ;)
I may be *wrong* re the VHD Vaccine theory but it's worth discussing it with the Vet. If Tao remains very 'bothered' by the wound then I would try to speak with a Vet tomorrow if at all possible.

Aloe Vera Gel is very soothing and my Vet recommends it for various skin conditions and wounds. She also uses it herself when she has an accident with a too hot oven dish!!

I was wondering about aloe vera gel, My best friend took all the skin of her hip/bum coming off a bike once and that stuff healed it so fast I couldnt believe it, and no scar

I wanted to use it on Tao but was worried about possibility of bunny licking it and poisoning self as its on the dangerous plants list isnt it :?

I cant watch her ALL the time :(

also would it react badly with the fuciderm already on her skin?

I'd not put anything more on the wound tonight. It would be great to get Tao some systemic anti-inflammatories and hopefuly the Vet will agree to this.

me too! I feel like I've been going mad today, My dad's shouted at me because he started putting up my shed in the garden and felt like I wasnt helping because I was running round after Tao and didn't even know he had started (had in fact forgotten plans to erect shed this weekend  )

then my mum shouted at me because I was in here trying to simultaneously find some help/info for Tao and network with house hunting buddies in wimbledon (who are actually IN london so can look at potential houses, unlike me  ) and my stuff is all over the house from moving out of my old place and trying to keep the two bunnies seperate today/last night/when I first got Tao

All in all I think returning to uni for my 3rd year is going to be a relief!!! (if we EVER find somewhere to live!) :p

Got to go rescue poor Tao now, she's having to endure my parents singing along to Last night of the proms

thanks again

Hello :)

sorry for not replying before, I've been ill the last few days.

Tao's wound is gradually healing and seems to be drying up and the edges are curling inwards, it looks so uncomfortable now poor girl :(

T&B - yes I had Splott in my last room (not in halls, private rented) and I will be taking both buns back with me at the end of this month :) *prays to all the fates that Tao magically gets the hang of litter training by then* I've never met a bun so disinclined to pee in the same place twice!!
