  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Suspected abscess!!!

He's had quite a bit of kale and has nibbled some strands of hay and he went up to his food bowl when we just fed him (he gets 30g of nuggets at 8pm every night!) but I don't think he munched anything.

We have given him 1ml of metacam just to help him feel a bit better but fingers crossed he will be perk up completely by tomorrow.

That sounds like a good dose of Metacam :thumb:

Hope he feels better by tomorrow :)

Thank you. The vets did give him a syringe feed before he came home and seems hungry/like he wants to eat but he's just concentrating on the soft veggies at the moment. Completely understandable considering what he's gone through.

He was being a feisty little so and so when we gave him the metacam so don't fancy trying to syringe feed him given his attitude. Plus as he's eating for himself I don't want to force any food into him. The more you interfere with him the more he sulks which makes it difficult to tell if he is improving or not!

Think our original calculation of metacam doses were wrong as when we first medicated the buns with it we understood it to be 0.2ml per kilo of body weight but as Harley is allowed 2mls tides day the dosages have obviously increased!

Suspected abscess: Update

So Harley went back to the vets today to have the sutures removed. On doing so they found that there was a small amount of stuff present. They cleaned it all out and applied some cream.

The wound is going to be left open and we are going to be applying the cream twice a day. He's had another shot of the antibiotic which is slow release.

He will be going back Monday but if there is still some stuff present then it may have to be drained again! They will also potentially give him another shot of the antibiotic and if necessary show us how to inject it at home if he's going to need it for the next 6 months or so.

He is sulking at the moment, he's had some kale, broccoli and a little munch on hay tonight but not really into his nuggets which isn't all too surprising. We have the metacam at the ready if we need it. Just not looking forward to waking up early tomorrow to help OH apply the cream and the inevitable sulking Harley is going to do!

Aahh sorry about the sulking! I'm glad the treatment protocol is in place though. You will get used to it and hopefully shortly it will feel 'normal' for the duration.

Vibes for Harley. And for you tomorrow morning :thumb:

Another Update!

Harley was back at the vets today for another check up. The vets said he's moving in the right direction but there was a small amount of gunk present which they flushed out. They have told us to continue with the barrier cream and we have been given the antibiotic to give at home. OH has been shown how to inject it so we are going to be having lots of fun.

The wound is tiny and is very difficult to actually find/see so we have been layering it on in the general area which seems to be doing the trick!

He's also due for his combo vaccine on 11 November so he's going back on 5th November for another check up and if the wound is ok then he'll get his vaccine. If not we might have to wait.

Thankfully he has been vaccinated every year we have had him and at the moment he is living in the kitchen so hopefully he'll be ok. Silly rabbit!

Sounds like good news and everything well under control!

Long may it continue :D
