  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore hocks again!

My rex girl Lulu is really suffering again with sore hocks. She has an episode every few months. She is kept on super soft flooring so nothing to aggravate her.

This time the vet had recommended her wearing baby socks while healing but can anyone recommend anything that might actually stay up and protect her feet.

Many thanks

IME putting just a sock like dressing on sore hocks is unhelpful. Any dressing needs to take the pressure off the sore area. Something like this

What other treatment, topical and/ or systemic is your Rabbit receiving ? IME a system NSAID eg Metacam is essential. Some examples of topical treatments I have found to be useful :

This one is a POM https://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/skin-hair/a6737/flamazine-cream-silver-sulfadiazine/

Exactly what type of flooring ? Even Vetbed can be too abrasive in some cases.

Is she a healthy weight ?

Sadly rex have thin fur on feet ant that is main reason. SO I was told. I thinking our loud if there is some cream that woul hardent the skin that might help. Plus weight and short nails, soft bedding. If in the house a stable mat foam might be great option or corck that is withouth varnish.
