  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Something is awry... Vet visited, not much changing! Stasis - maybe?

Xray showed nothing.
Vet has suggested bloods and test those whilst keeping him fed/on pain relief for the time being rather than risk dentals as she's really not convinced that's the issue so doesn't want to risk the anesthesia yet.

See how he is tomorrow...

What part of his body was x-rayed? Bloods would be a good idea. However, if they can see dental spurs on examination, then I'm not sure why the vet doesn't think that is the issue.

Minor spurs, she accepts its an issue but doesn't think its causing his general lethargy as no trauma to the mouth or tongue.

Whole body incl head

OK, blood tests are a good idea then, although some bunnies can get very upset with minor spurs. He also had a weepy eye, didn't he?

& to add, I think she acknowledges its an issue, but wants to rule other things out before we go for anaesthetic as that's not risk free

Yeah, that's gone away now though... I think that may have been caused by us having to lift his mouth up and an accidental poke in the eye! There's no other issues that point to dental

Vet's called and blood results aren't great. Apparently has signs of liver failure. Number of issues showing on the test results.

Going to speak to a specialist tomorrow to see if there's any options other than put to sleep. V sad.

Oh no, I'm so sorry :( Poor Bear, I hope the specialist has some positive advice for him tomorrow.

I'm really sorry to hear this, and also hope that the specialist can help Bear. Sending many more vibes for your boy xx

Oh no I’m so sorry :( I hope there will be some suitable treatment options available to you. Xx

Vet update this morning... They are struggling to get hold of a specialist.

The vet this morning sounded less worried than the other vet - and whilst he is showing signs of liver disease, isn't showing signs of liver failure. She suggested the inflated liver readings may be caused by his lack of good diet for the past 5 days.

Xray did not include full head Xray yesterday (as that needs precision/sedation), and was just the body.

Her suggested next steps (which I have agreed to):
- Dentals whilst he is "strong" enough to take anaesthetic, in the hope that filing the spurs down will get him eating properly again...
- Cursory head Xray to check for nothing major (full dental Xray would take significantly longer and more anaesthetic, therefore more risk to rabbit and perhaps not enough benefit to him).
- Ultrasound of liver to check for no major trauma, tumour etc.

Vet is quite inexperienced (by their own admission) on liver problems with rabbits and all specialists are a significant distance away which is frustrating but not sure we can do much more at this point than try the above.

Still touch and go, but fingers crossed.

Hope the Dental procedure goes well.

Even a short period of anorexia can effect Liver enzymes. This resolves once the Rabbit is eating normally again.

A Liver lobe torsion is something an U/S should rule out.

This sounds a bit more positive. Bunny Momma suggested that his liver values might have been caused by his recent reduced diet.

What is Bear eating now? When does the vet think it's likely he would be able to have the dental?

Update...

Had dental. He's awake. Spurs are now gone, vet is "hopeful" that was what has caused his malaise having removed them.

Ultrasound and high level head Xray completed and nothing obvious showing to the vets.

Vets have a good stock of greens / dried food etc that they are feeding him. He's also on a drip etc to keep him hydrated and I think he's having other syringe stuff (meds and food).

Fingers crossed.
