Ridiculous vet prices

My vets are very good with bunnies, they charged £40 each for a neuture, which I thought was quite reasonable, not sure how much a spay is as I have two chaps!

But vacs there are very expensive, £15 per vac, so thats £30 per bun for myxi and vhd, £60 in total for me!

But they do seem quite good with bunnies, my vet is very knowledgable, so I think it might be worth paying and keep quiet about my feelings of their charges!

I've just got back from the vets in Gamston and was pleased with their care and prices so going on my first visit I would reccommend them.

(In case you're wondering they charged £19 total to file both Esmereldas and Hanns back teeth under gas.)

They do seem to vary. Mine's £30 for a neuter, & £35 for a spay. When they saw me turning up with different rabbits (like every week!!), they gave me a 10% bulk discount!! :D

 !!
it cost me £75 to have my male neutered!
though they do give me discount for vacination if i go in with 3 or more buns....but....still...yikes! what a price leap!

I've found a really good vet that charges me £20.00 for a male neuter and £30.00 for a female neuter.

Thanks for that Mandy.

I've just taken on a Rabbit who has ongoing dental problems and its nice to know there is a fairly local vet I can go to that is experienced with Rabbit dentistry and their prices are reasonable. :)

My vets just put up their neuter prices  It is going to hurt
I still get a discount, but now it will cost me £40 for a spay, was £32, but they put the usual undiscounted price up to £55!! I am getting a good discount, but still, ouch  Castrates went up too, but not as much.

I hope they haven't put the dental charges up as well, Rowan is having yet another one tomorrow :?

I win £90 for a spay, £60 for a neuter! It's bleeping awful! And £28 a myxy jab. £9 just for them to check the teeth or cut claws! It's absolutely awful!

£20 thats excellent! It was £66 at my now old vets!

I'm interested to know more about the vets in Gamston please :D Our vets are very good and fairly reasonable but Gabbie had her back molar spurs done yesterday and it cost me £46 (should've been £56 but I pay into their petplan) now this was fine but she said sometimes this needs to be done every 4 weeks  so it might be better to go there. Can you go to 2 different vets? (sorry if I sound thick  ) for different things (ie. just there for the teeth)

I paid £115.00 last year to spey Beebie, a consultation with the vet is £25.00 plus treatment, drugs.

I also have a horse and a visit fee to come 30miles to see him is £25.00 plus treatment, i travel 3 miles to see Bracken`s vet, the horse is cheaper than Bracken :? on vet consultation.

You can see why animals aren`t taken to the vets when ill, as owners are suprised by the cost of seeing a vet. They no they have to pay but are shocked at the £££, so the next time the animal needs vet treatment they don`t go straight away thinking it`ll get better when in most cases it doesn`t.

My vet who looks after Paddy has her dog insured as we have had many a discussion on vet fees, so what does that tell you????????

I have to claims going through at the moment one for the late Beebie £280.00 and Brackens GI Statis £120.00, i`m glad i have insurance.

Hi Jayne
It's good to hear Gabbie was ok after her GA yesterday.
It sounds like my bun, Esmerelda and Gabbie have the same problem. I nearly had a heart attack when my old vet said she would need her back teeth doing once a month...at £80 a time! .

The price of £19 for two buns at Gamston mentioned above was for gas not GA though- think its £25 for GA. The vet said not all buns can have gas (Hann was too fiesty so he can't have it again) but £25 is still much cheaper for you if Gabbie can't.

I think it would be fine to go to Gamston just for dentals, they'll just ask for any previous treatment to be faxed over to them x

Sorry Mandy only just caught up with this again! Thanks for info I'll see how we go with Gabbie, she may not need them doing again or it could be a regular thing (poor baby).Does gas just make them drowsy and is it less stressful for them (sorry about all the questions  ) Will keep you posted on how she gets on.

I have to weigh up the fact that my vet is a rabbit specialist

Where abouts in London are you? I'd love to find a rabbit specialist fairly near me...I'm in Crouch End (N8).

I must admit I don't really know a great deal about how it works with gas as they were taken out of the room, but as far as I am aware I think it could be more stressful as they are awake (does someone else know about this please?)

Hann and Esmerelda were only drowsy for about half an hour after the treatment, so thats defiently a bonus

Gamston give them a whiff of gas..some buns can have a bad reaction like a GA..but they are not completely out and recover much quicker.....one point for all those on here out of Gamston's area and thinking of going...they have just been taken over by Vets4pets and only allowed Honeybunny's to take our buns there as we are a rescue recognised by the RSPCA and my fosterer has used them for years as she works close by.
They may not take too well to lots of people out of the area just registering for cheap dental treatment....this is just my opinion :? However if you are in the area I would recommend them :D

With just Anaesthetic Gas Bun is likely to drift in and out of concsiousness so it may well be stressful if the proceedure takes some time to complete.
There is also the risk of 'breath holding' when the gas is administered. If a FULL GA is used and gas used as a 'top up' then breath holding is less likely as Bun is already unconscious when gas is administered. I dont think I would subject any of my Buns to a dental on Gas alone.

Thanks for advice everyone (sorry I hijacked the thread a bit  ) These bunnies are a worry aren't they!!

When Esmerelda had her check up yesterday the vet explained that the gas treatment was more of a quick fix as she wasn't eating properly (they were both in less than 15 minutes). She is having a GA next week and will have that once a month from now on.
