Rabbits in free ads: protocol UD got 'em p18

OK so I've just responded to an ad in Freecycle which doesn't allow animals to be advertised for 'two male rabbits' I'm waiting for the 'seller' to respond before reporting the ad (I said I could get them today). Then I'll try and find them a rehome place :S I would like to think I've done the right thing simply getting them out of there, wherever they're unwanted, but I'm no 'experienced handler' so giving them a free health check might be hard... But I've got space and accommodation to separate and food etc. to feed them so hopefully it'll be OK. Equally don't want to 'encourage' free ad rules ignroance :S

I can only say, well done :D My views on responding to free-ads are probably more lax than the 'accepted view'. I think if a rabbit is unwanted, it's unwanted, and I think it's a caring response to the welfare needs of that rabbit to get it.

Btw I don't think you'll have much problem finding a new home or homes. Currently there are not many rabbits available in rescues.

What exactly is this? I couldn't understand. What is a rabbit advertisement? There is no such thing in my country. Are the rabbits sold with advertisements? But you say free advertisement. I'm confused, what exactly is this?

There are websites for selling second hand stuff for money or for free online. Some people advertise animals on them as well as furniture etc for free or for money. There's a lot of unwanted rabbits on these sites unfortunately :(

In my area it looks like there are loads in but huge waiting lists! :D They can't get spayed etc. fast enough. I haven't had a response yet and, judging by the ad, they might have gone already on a different site like Preloved or FB Marketplace

Hmm, how to explain 'the free ads' So, Freecycle is a place where you sign up and can post offering your things you don't want to other people for free. Most sites explicitly exclude animals but ths one has got through (Nott'm Freecycle's usually pretty good at sorting out rules-breaching posts, they must be busy). There are a number of these sites and some you can ask for money and some is free stuff only, Freecycle for example is free and you can ask for things too.

Oh yes, I understand now. I also see pets on these sites in our country. Rabbits are also found on these sites. :| What can I do for them? Pets are not very common in Turkey. It will be hard to find a home for them. :|

It’s awful how many results you get for ‘Rabbit’ on Preloved, Gumtree, Pets4homes, Freeads etc.
Most of them are under a year old it makes me so angry like just don’t get a pet in the first place

I don’t think this is the case! If you know of rescues needing bunnies please let me know as we have never known it so bad! Can’t get them in fast enough :(

I think this would have been a lovely thing to do KK, regardless of the rights or wrongs of advertising them in the first place. I hope they are ok.

Yes, from what I’ve heard, rescues are still having to turn rabbits away

OK, this is possibly a local issue for here then. I've just re-checked the RSPCA search site and for the whole of Kent there is just one single male rabbit. Our local RSPCA also seems to have stopped having rabbits, whereas a few years ago they used to have between 1 and 3.

This experience seems to have been confirmed by twistedtiggerz69 recently, who also lives in Kent.

Perhaps it's also a short-term issue.

Ah OK. The likelihood is that they have bunnies but just can’t advertise them due to neutering delays, vets are still not operating as they were and as such there is a ‘backlog’ of buns cannot be advertised due to not being neutered. I would say that the rabbit rescue problem has reached crisis point just recently, it is devastating as there are just not enough good homes vs number of bunnies :(

It could be. Although from my experience, not all RSPCA branches actually take in rabbits as such. Some seem to specialise in them but for example my most local ones would never usually have them.

It's not my experience either. I am active in bunny groups on Facebook rounding up strays, neglected and at risk rabbits etc but the problem in the chain is finding rescue spaces.

Maybe there are less visible in rescues because they are struggling with funds so are having to work on a smaller scale?

Thanks, yes, I know this and have taken account of it.

One of our local big name rescues that takes them is closing unfortunately.

We are lucky to live fairly near an Rpca wildlife rehab centre and they take everything.

Whenever I've called to check if they need anything for their buns they're almost always full but the legal process they have to go through takes ages when they've confiscated them. So they're being held up by the covid delays with courts as well as vet backlogs.

They also move animals to areas that have more demand if they are struggling long term to find a home for them. When we saw Rodney they had an arrival that had been waiting for a home for 9 months at a different centre but he was so timid we were worried Primrose would bully him, luckily he found a home the next day.

So we've got them :D They're on Bunnies In Need (FB; there was already a post about them) and one should be able to go to a local rescue later this week. I might ring around vets tomorrow morning to see what vacancies they've got for vaccs, because while really hormonal male bunnies who can still see each other are a PITA they're not risking themselves unlike being unvaccinated! If the other stays with us for any length of time, we'll look to get him neutered too, and we'll throw some money their rescues' way :)

When I brought them through the garden, ours were deciding whether to go out on the lawn or not, I told them we'd replaced them  We did, indeed, replace them on the lawn as ours weren't using it! They're in two hutches with some run space. It's open-topped so we're not letting them out tomorrow when I'm not home and Matt's at work, because even though he's home he can't check on them as easily as I can. They're little, Nethies cross brothers. They like digging (showing off), spraying wee (showing off), scenting EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME (showing off), trying to kill each other, and eating :) The blacker one has healed wounds on his back. No mention of them seeing a vet.

There's more seeing-each-other and interaction prevention in place than shown in the pic :) Both covered in wee stains, their wee stinks (oh hormonal males!), the blacker one's claws are a little long (not bad yet), the whiter one has a single matt on its back I couldn't tease out (like a stuck seed), and they're a bit overweight but they seem OK otherwise. Tiny poos at the moment but they like hay and grass!

We've been lucky with our buns too: Chibbs gets really, hmm, agitated, running about all over the place for about 15mins every few hours, but she hasn't chased Lopsy any more than normal (there's probably one chase a day really, bloomin' rabbits!) and Lopsy couldn't care less. Once one goes to rescue, the other will get a hutch-dog crate combo which isn't ideal but is more permanent space than they've had in their lives still, although still less than their daytime setup now. We've acclimatised them to forage :D

They're totally non-aggressive with people, even when they're facing off. They'll make great little family members one day  We are not keeping them  They are dinky little lovelies and I think would suit housebunnies best, although one's apparently a chewer, we're yet to see it (too much digging going on ). Good job our lawn needed a makeover anyway  The best thing is, on the bits they can dig down (there's little where they can dig across: sunken bricks etc.) there're 1/2" tree roots about 4" down which Matt's taken to calling 'nature's own digging deterrent'

Aww beautiful buns!

Well done for bringing them home to give them a wonderful chance at a new life x
