Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Rabbit fur mites....?

Hi,

Ok,so I once had a small problem with fur mites with my rabbits of course,so I researched and treated it. But recently I brought some Panomec to give orally 0.1ml per 1kg of bun,as many people do. I noticed one of my older rabbits had the start of it,so I thought great got the Panomec, lets get treating! I'd heard that Panomec was VERY effective. Anyway, its been over 2wks and the rabbit that had it hasn't cleared,I gave 0,2mls(she weighs 2kg) and after a week nothing had happened,so I gave just 1 drop. Its not getting worse, but its not getting better either! What else can I do,other than the vets atm,if possible? Of course I will take her if there is no solution. Or is it justing taking a while to work?

Many thanks.x

The drug of choice for fur mites (cheyletiella mites) in rabbits is Ivermectin. I'm not certain how safe Panomec is in rabbits - the only thing I can find for it is its use in cattle and sheep?!
I would recommend Ivermectin by injection or spot-on from your vet - in a form designed especially for rabbits. The spot-on is called Xeno450 and is given once every 2 wks for 6 wks (so 3 doses) same as the injectable.

Thats the stuff I got given for my mite infested little man.Tried the Xeno 200 first....no good at all but the 450 is excellent.
I used to use Ivermectin for my ferrets.A drop or 2 in each ear one week then repeat.(Ear mites give ferrets the staggers. This is horrible, where the mites burrow into the brain).
Panomec?? Hmmmm.Saw that used on sheep and cattle.A tad too strong I would say.If in doubt.........xxx
