Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

prevent scab from forming on a abscess

New Kit
My rabbit developed an abscess under her chin last week. The vet opened it and drained the pus. Now we are on wound flushing and Silver Sulfadiazine twice daily.

Since the wound is quite small, it keeps closing and forming scab after 24 hours. I hate to keep removing the scab, as it is not the most comfortable thing for her. Is there a way to keep the wound open? I read plain vaseline would do that. Is it ok we apply a thin layer of vaseline after Silver Sulfadiazine? Any other tricks?

Thank you all in advance!

Keeping the scab soft will help. Sometimes, the wound is kept open surgically with sutures. Inevitably, it will scabover as part of the natural healing process.
Are you using medical grade manuka honey in the wound after flushing it out? It helps with the healing process on the inside of the wound. Ask your vet about it.

Is your Rabbit on systemic antibiotics ? Did the Vet ensure that the source of infection is not a tooth root ? This would involve skull radiographs being taken.

Vaseline applied from a sterile cotton bud might help prevent scab formation, check with your Vet first.

I did ask the vet whether the abscess was caused by a dental issue, and she said she checked the back teeth, and they looked fine, so she ruled out that possibility. She didn't take any x-ray.

She didn't put the rabbit on systemic antibiotics either.

Hmmmmm, well it will be a case of wait and see with regards to whether the abscess recurs or not. Hopefully not :)
