  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

pregnant bunny!

I have very little experience of pregnant rabbits, I have had four come in pregnant and I have a question. Is it normal for a rabbit to be "like a barrel" when pregnant? All four of the girls that came to me pregnant showed no particular signs of being so - three were checked by a vet and they didn't think they were pregnant either. :? They didn't have particularly small litters either, 4, 5 and 6.

The vet also advised me to feed them as normal even if I did suspect they might be pregnant and to only up the food once the babies were born.

Many rabbits don't look pregnant at all, except if they are carrying abnormally large litters. Heck Patches had 8 kits in her first litter and we didn't notice she was pregnant:roll:

mine dont show any signs of being preg until they start nest building i did once have a rabbit go like a barrel but she did have 12 kits which i was very worried about so i gave her lactol to help her out

From al the nest i have ever bread only one female really looked pragnant.
All the others no mather how big there nest where, never showed a big belly.

I have a dwarf lop from a line that gives abnormaly large nests.
6 to 10 is normal for here and she al gets them big without any help, and she is an normal size dwarf lop.
Size and how many babies doesn't tell anything.
1 of mij color dwarf lines are also now for there large nests
