  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ive has a bit of a nightmare few weeks!

My 2 year old mini lop lost a nail 3 weeks ago, after a rush t the vet all was fine utill the following week when he flinched on getting his face rubbed. Another rushed visit to the vet they told me it wasan ear infection in both ears and gave me a weeks worth of ear drops. Munchie hated getting these drops and barely came out his house for the whole week.

Back to the vet to get him checked out on the day the drops were due to finish and all was fine. Commented to the vet about him not wanting to come out his house - this is not like him, he is normally very active and sooky.

I noticed that night that he was off his food, still drinking and peeing at that point. Gave him fresh food the next morning and it was barely touched on that evening. Noticed he had pooed less but had still being peeing. Still wasnt himself and wouldnt come out for cuddles.

The next morning I gave him fresh food again and it hadnt been touched when I came home from work and he looked really down so another visit to the vet.

The vet said his teeth looked fine, his tummy was ok as well. She gave him 2 injections - one was an antibiotic and one was to make him hungry. She said to try and get him to eat anything and let him have what he would eat. That was friday and Ive to take him back on monday.

On Friday he stopped drinking water completely no peeing or pooing at all! He managed to eat a tiny bit of carrort and half a lettice leaf.

Saturday I was getting realy worried so got him loads of different things to see if he would eat something and got a smaller water bottle from the pet shop so I could keep a closer eye on what he was drinking.

Phoned the vet again on sat as he still wasnt keen on eating anyhing and she told me to try him with probiotic yoghurt and syringe feed him water and still bring him to her on monday. I ended up having to syringe feed him the yoghurt and hes now drinking small quantities of water out a bowl. He ate some spinach yesterday afternoon and a tiny bit of brocolli, still no pellets.

Last night I had read on line about trying to massage his tummy which I attempted and within an hour he had done a rather large pee.

Through last night he has pooed but not sure if it was a runny poo or soft poo which he has then stood on.

I have not heard him grinding his teath and havent heard any strange noises coming from his tummy - really dont know whats wrong with him and I feel the ve doesnt have a lue either :( They are good vets and came highly recommended.

Dont know what to do and Im so worried about him

Maybe it could be his back teeth he is having problems with:?
Has he been given any painkillers at all?
I would seriously think about going to a different vet for another opinion.
Hope all goes well with him:D

she had a look at his teeth which he didnt enjoy and thinks they are fine :( he's not had any painkillers

ive just noticed his left eye looks like its been running, does this mean that it could be his teeth? Does anyone know what kind of painkillers I can give him and where I would get them?

Hi, watery eyes "can" be a sign that it could be teeth, but it could be a different reason.

I would take him back to the vet asap to get checked out and ask them to double check the teeth. If he is in pain, he won't eat. You can only get the painkiller from the vet.

I hope he will be OK.

his water eye seemed to clear up last night, still not ate a huge amount but has ate some greens. Back to the vet tonight, ill let you all know how he is when i get home

Sounds like it could be his teeth, ive no experience with dental buns, but i do think that the vet has to sedate buns to check their teeth properly, could be something that cant be picked up from a concious dental.
Good luck at the vets,
K x

the vet still doesnt know whats wrong with him, she checked his teeth again and said one looks like its got a bit of a sharp point on it but nothing that would cause any problems. She's now considering refering me to a specialist!

She gave me a couple of sachets of liquid food and probiotic powder to mix with it whic he hated me trying to feed him but I managed to get about a quarter of the sachet in him last night.

Small progress through the night - he has continued to eat some greens and had 3 small normal poo's. He had also ate the brown pellets from a small handful of muesli YAY

The vet wanted to see him back tonight if he wasnt any bette but think I'll leave it till tomorrow now - dont want to stress him out too much seeing as he has made some progress

Sound like he could do with some pain relief!
Metacam/Meloxicam/Carprofen/Rimdayl etc are all NSAID's (Non steroidal anti-inflammatory pain killers) and are commonly prescribed by vets for buns who are not eating as buns often mask pain. It is a sure bet that a bun not eating and not passing normal droppings or any droppings is in pain. Fluids are also essential. A bun not eating is invariably a bun not drinking.
I would want both pain relief (can be given orally at home or by injection from vet) and fluids if it were my bun. Hope he feels better soon. :)
