Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Pippin has a broken paw

Last night I tripped and fell on the ice, and poor Pippin was caught underneath me when I fell. This morning, the end of her hind paw is dangling, and I am assuming it is probably broken. She is going to the vet later this morning, but in the meantime what is the best thing to do? I have given her some metacam and have put her in a pet carrier. So far she is eating well and seems happy enough. She is an outdoor bun, and I am not sure whether to bring her inside or not? It is very frosty out, and I know a sudden change in temperature can affect their system.

From what I've read on the net, the healing process usually takes about 7 weeks. Will she need to stay in a small cage for all that time? If so, would it be possible to bring her inside until she is better?

She may need surgery depending on exactly what damage has actually been done. So until this is determined it is not possible to say what sort of accommodation she will need. Certainly for now she needs confinement and it is good that you have given her some Metacam.

Good luck at the Vets xx

Yikes! :(

I echo what Jane said, let us know what the vet says after your visit and we can advise more about accomodation etc.

I hope shes ok, loads of vibes xxx

Poopr Pippin, best of luck at the vets. :)

As Jane said, a lot will depend on what's wrong and what the vet decides to do about the injury; Alfie needed 6 weeks confinement when he dislocated his hock but that's not to say Pippin will. Please let us know how she gets on. xx

Not good news I'm afraid. Apparently the break is right at the joint and both bones have been broken. The vet is going to x-ray to double check, but has advised that it's unlikely to heal.

It looks like she will have to have the paw amputated now :(

Poor girl. She was originally a very nervous bun, but after 5 years she has become much more tame of late, and has started coming into the kitchen begging for food. I really hope she's going to come through this. Will gladly create some indoor accommodation for her if that would be the best thing. Will keep you all updated. Please send vibes for her op ...

Aww poor Pippin :(

I think due to the surgery she is going to need, and the time she is going to need to recouperate, bringing her inside for the winter would be a good idea.

However, bring her in as soon as is possible before she gets too used to the cold temperatures, and keep her in a cold room with no heating and maybe a window open at first to acclimatise her slowly

Thanks for all your thoughts and advice guys.

She had her x-ray this afternoon, and vet says she is now thinking of trying plaster of paris afterall, as apparently the break is quite neat. Though on the downside her two of her toes are broken as well :(

She is staying in until Monday when a specialist fracture vet will be in - then he'll make the decision whether or not to try and salvage her paw.

Will keep you all updated.

A quick update - they decided to amputate yesterday. She is an old girl, so was relieved that she came through the op ok. Hopefully will pick her up later today or tomorrow, depending on how well she comes round. Have got a nice indoor cage all ready for her. About to enter into new territory - the world of the house rabbit!

Aw, poor girl! I'm glad the op went well though, hopefully she'll come around soon and will be able to go home :) Keep us updated on how she's doing please :)
