I had a poorly Pip yesterday when I got home from work
She had diarrhoea , she has been so good & only really uses her tray recently so when I came home and saw a few splats downstairs, and some scattered upstairs I knew something was wrong (well I knew it was wrong just by the fact it was runny anyway). Quickly got her out, disinfected & cleaned the whole hutch.
Took her into the garage, and washed her the best I could (she had poo all over her ears, feet etc and caked in her fur poor Pip). I got as much as I could off – but she began to get extremely stressed so in the end I let her back into her hutch, confident she would wash her self to help finish it off, and she did.
Put her back in and normal poo resumed, and she spent a long time washing herself. Checked on her throughout the eve and she seemed fine. She only has Hay & pellets, plus lots of fresh water.
We think we know the cause, a friend of ours got her some ‘natural’ yoghurt treats which my sister gave her a few of (about 1-2 days ago) and I think that the ingredients teamed with the hot weather have just got on top of her. Obviously she wont be allowed any treats & has a strict diet of hay & pellets for now! No more of those treats, but we did get a really good treat basket (one of them willow basket ones), ill give some of that to her once she is totally clear of this.
She is far better now and I would go as far as to say 99% back to normal, but she was a little quiet this morning when I went out – but I think that was more aimed toward me as if to say nooo don’t pick me up & try to bath me again, as in the end she gave in & came over for a nice big fuss!
She had been drinking, using the tray and all poo’s were clean ones, and I saw her tucking right into the pellets and having some hay. Will keep a very close eye on todays water intake, but I have a syringe which I will give her some water with at lunch time if I am concerned she isn’t drinking enough. I may even pop to the vets after work to see if I can get any electrolytes, hydration fluids to top up her water so she gets maximum benefit.
I spoke to our vet yesterday as soon as I had cleaned the hutch & Pip, they advised me to keep a very close eye on her over the evening & night, checking for any further loose stools, and to take her in asap this morning if still bad. Luckily she has been fine & my vets been great, he specialises in little bunnies & looks after my poorly cat so well for us.
I am at work today – but can pop home around 12.40ish to check on her for half hour or so and just see how she is getting on, and if I think she still needs a little help may give her another wash.
My fly netting only arrived yesterday & I am still wondering how I will affix it to her hutch – so currently she has no netting, which is obviously a concern – but she has no wet really obvious mucky poo at the moment – thankfully, her hutch is spotless and I am keeping a close eye on her & checking for any fly eggs etc.
Is there anything I can do to try and safe guard her/give her to get her energy levels up & balance in her tummy & insides back to normal? Other than obviously keeping a close eye on her, making sure she has plenty of water & only has hay/pellets to eat – and her hutch is kept clean/and she is as clean as possible.
