Pet Insurance, who has it?

WOW did Petplan pay it ok?? Do you have to pay first then petplan pay you? thats worries me!!

PetPlan paid it without question

£300 was my own vets, £1,300 was the specialist vet who we were referred to. I believe each vet has their own ways of dealing with insurance, some prefer you to pay them and have PetPlan refund you, and others will accept PetPlan paying them directly. Other still have a mix of the two arrangements. It's best to find out before an emergency which way your vet swings so you can plan for saving up to pay out first if necessary.

I was lucky that the £300 bill was a pay upfront arrangement and the £1300 was able to go directly from PetPlan to the vets  (but I always have my credit card on standby if I did need to pay out a large sum first before getting refunded!)

(EDIT to change PayPal to PetPlan  think i need some sleep!)

I have never insured any of my bunnies, as I would rather just pay the amount when it happens rather than pay out for it each month, but for my dog the vet takes the money directly from the insurance Kath when it was expensive over £1000, whereas when it was only like £89 they took it of my mum then she then had to claim back

Would insurance cover stasis problems at all? I have a bunny that is prone to bouts of it and assumed she'd be uninsurable.

Yes, as long as it's not a pre-existing condition. Pet Plan have paid out for stasis for Esme and I have a claim in for Elijah at the moment.

I find the stasis issue a bit strange as when I originally started insurance policies Artie was excluded for stasis as he had had several bouts - his exclusion was anything 'gastro-intestinal'. (I ended up cancelling the insurance before it really started). When he eventually got a diagnosis his 'not eating' bouts almost certainly secondary to bladder problems so his issue wasn't really gastro-intestinal - that's just the big clue we get when something's wrong. So they will put an exclusion on for GI as it's their best option but then other conditions which might actually be the underlying condition would be covered as they were unknown prior to the insurance starting.

I've got pet plan for my two. Next timewe need the vet I will be putting in a claim as we have used up the excess on them already and only had them a few weeks!

But saying that I paid into a plan for my bys and never used it once. they didn't even cover the cost of the autopsy or funeral.

When I contacted Pet Plan they said they did cover dentals - but teeth have to be checked annually (provided, of course, they hadn't had any dental problems prior to taking out the insurance). You've got me worried now.

They don't cover teeth trimming or burring. I believe they may cover more complex dental problems or problems caused by dental issues.

And yes they do cover stasis. My wally had several bouts of Ileus and we are not sure what caused it. PetPlan have paid out without problem.

Just sorted mine with Petplan.
Thank you for the comments I didn't know where to look as loads of places don't cover rabbits!!

I'd insure my rabbit but at 7 years old i'm guessing he wouldn't be insurable ...

Any other rabbits I have from now on will definitely be insured though ... recently a week's treatment and tests at the vets cost me almost £400

My dog is insured through pet plan and that costs about £20 a month

as we have 6 guinea pigs 2 cats and 3 buns ..insurance every month wouldnt be cost effective..
we have an isa that is only for vet bills..we pay in as much as we can every month and only use it when we really need to.the good thing is you can get to the money straight away too. we used to have insurance but found thaty every time we tried to claim there would be an excuse why they wouldnt:shock:
insurance is great for one or two pets i find...
