Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Peanut Butter's abscess is back. He's gone :(

Peanut Butter passed away this morning

Up until yesterday he had been really good eating his recovery food from a saucer. But from yesterday afternoon he didn't seem interested when I put it in front of him so I started feeding him via the syringe. Along with the emperid to try and keep his gut moving. When I went to do the morning feed he was very lethargic and he didn't even swallow the food, just dribbled it out. He also felt cold so I immediately took him straight to the emergency vet. There were gut sounds, but not as much as there should be. His body temperature and glucose were both very low. The vet thought the low blood glucose might indicate septicaemia.

They managed to stabilise him and advised that we should still go to the RVC appointment as arranged because they have specialists and she believed that was his best hope. We took a cab directly there and unfortunately he died on the way. I knew he had gone because he had a seizure and was then very still and seemed to have stopped breathing. He was admitted straightaway and they confirmed he had gone

The only comfort I'm getting at the moment is that I was with him when he passed and he died snuggled into Snoopy so he wasn't on his own. They were also very kind at the RVC and let me have some time to cuddle him and say goodbye, something I wasn't able to do with Scrappy.

I just feel I've utterly failed him. All I had to do was stop him going into stasis before his abscesses could be investigated and treated and I couldn't do that :(

I now have to get another friend for Snoopy. He much prefers the company of other rabbits than humans so I feel I need to do that quickly otherwise I'm worried he will get very depressed. I'm going to find that really hard as I'd developed a close bond with Peanut Butter but I have to now do what is best for Snoopy.

I am so very sorry to hear this :(

You tried your utmost best and I am thinking of you x

I hope Snoopy will be OK xx Sending hugs x

I'm so so sorry. Please don't feel like you failed him, you are a wonderful person to have kept trying with him. RIP Peanut Butter, binky free xxx

So sorry for your loss.
Please don't feel you failed, you did everything you could and more. Binky free Peanut Butter xx

I'm so sorry  you did everything you possibly could for him. Sending you hugs xx

I'm so sorry. You really couldn't have done more for Peanut Butter - he was lucky to have you.

Never would you fail one of your bunnies, you are so obviously a really dedicated owner & did everything possible. I'm terribly sorry to hear you lost him. Love to you & Snoopy.

Sleep well Peanut butter xx

I've so very sorry to read of your loss. So very unfair that you going through this again so soon.

Peanut Butter was very lucky to have you advocating for him. If you didn't win then it was a no-win situation.

I am so sorry to read this latest sad update about Peanut Butter  Please don't feel you have failed him. You know how difficult it is to keep a rabbit's gut moving and in my view you did all you could. Rabbit abscesses are horrible and incredibly difficult to treat successfully long term. You are, as others have said, a very dedicated rabbit owner and Snoopy's next friend will be a very lucky rabbit to share a home with you.

Don't forget also how you gave these two a wonderful home. Peanut Butter's last months will have been filled with happiness. Sometimes, with any creature, they just can't be healed despite everyone's best efforts.

Sending you lots of hugs.

I am so sorry to read this. It is a natural reaction to think you failed Peanut Butter, but you didn't. You did everything you could, and gave him a wonderful life. Thinking of you xx

Thank you so much again everyone for your kind words. It really has helped me a lot. I've already started e-mailing rescues. Part of me feels that it's too soon but I know these things can take time and getting the ball rolling has given me something to focus on. Here is the last picture I took of him a few days ago, cuddled up with Snoopy. It is a bit blurry because I took it from the sofa (I didn't want to get up and disturb them!). Snoopy really was an amazing friend to him in the last few days. He was always snuggled up to him and grooming him - something he rarely did before.

Oh I'm so sorry. : (
***Binky Free Peanut Butter***

I couldn't agree more with everyone. You absolutely did not fail your boy. It's a difficult battle you & had to keep fighting, getting ahead of infection and all the complications it can bring.
You were his best advocate and right there by his side giving comfort.

All the best in finding Snoopy a perfect little friend.
