  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Pasteurella!

RosemaryBunny

Young Bun
Rosemary has been having random sneezing bouts, accompanied by nose wiping. She looks perfectly healthy otherwise, her normal healthy bouncy self, no watery eyes, eating well, and breathing normally most of the time. It started yesterday. I'm sure it's not allergies!

Also, she is nursing her five 6-week-old babies. Should I separate them? I am very worried!

I agree with Shimmer and would take her and the babies to the vet. I wouldn't separate her and the babies; if the babies catch whatever Rosemary might have, it will already have happened, so there's no reason to.

Well, I tried my best, but my parents won't let me take them to the vet. For logical reasons of course. But the vet is definitely out of the question now...

Are there any other treatment methods I can try at home? Any antibiotics? And do you know how long it takes for snuffles to become serious?

Thanks, that makes sense. Do you think I should move them away from my other rabbits' enclosures, though? They're right next to each other. Or do you think it's too late? It's been three days already...

There's no way you can know what is causing the snuffles without a professional examination. Rabbits can go down hill very quickly, partiularly if they are stressed or very young. I would not want anything to spread to them all. You also can't rehome the babies if there's a risk of them becoming ill, or even from being in contact with a spreadable illness.

Yeah, I figured it would be inhumane and irresponsible to rehome them if they were sick. But I am helpless under my parent's authority, and I repeat, there's nothing I can do about it!😢

Okay, so I found a promising-looking natural antibiotic, safe for all animals. Though it does have great reviews, it includes garlic and wormwood, two plants I'm not sure will be okay for rabbits. Any advice?

It's a very difficult, but if this is your situation perhaps it's best not to breed rabbits, as your parents won't allow the absolute most basic care for them. It's not really fair on the animals who are being born into this situation. If you were in charge of the situation you'd ensure they got the right treatment from a vet. That's the one sucky thing about not being an adult, something I used to struggle with a lot.

You may need to surrender your bunnies to a rescue, if you can find one with space, to insure they are getting the proper medical care.
I am sorry you are in such a difficult situation with your parents.
Unless your other bunnies have symptoms already, you should separate them from the Rosemary and her babies. It is possible stress of being a mom made Rosemary more likely than your other rabbits to get ill.
Hugs to you too.
