Need Advice in Treatment Middle Ear Infection Please!!

Mulberry started having one ear down about a week ago (usually an ears up bun). He is prone to nerves and I thought it might just be that or heat - anyway after it did not improve over a couple of days I took him to the vet and she says she can see puss in his middle ear in one ear. The other is clear.

He is on Baytril once a day (double dose once a day as very very nervy and can go into stassis if has to be caught much.).

However the ear is not going back up and I can see just a smidgeon of his third eyelid so i suspect it is not working.

We will go back on Tuesday. the vet is rabbit savvy and I have every confidence - but personally have no experience of middle ear infections. His teeth are good and he is very healthy otherwise - and still eating and running around (although always nervy).

Anyone ever had a bun with a middle ear infection? What might I expect next? Can this get serious - should we try something more aggressive despite his nerves?

Is a test of the puss a good idea?

My Vet would be more likely to prescibe an injectable Penicillin (Depocillin) and possibly Metronidazole.

There have been reports on here of Zithromax being very effective in cases of severe otitis media

Is he on an anti-inflammatory aswell as abx ?

ETA -a swab for C+S would have been best being done before any abx treatment. Doing it now, whilst he is on Baytril will give unreliable results.

My Dominic has an ear infection. He's on baytril and surolan ear drops. Progress is slow, but his ear doesn't smell like fermented yeast any more, so hopefully he's improving.

Apparently ear drops need to be continued long after symptoms have stopped because ear infections can be very stubborn and can keep recurring if treatment isn't long-term.

I am not sure why she did not go for injectable - she did say that for one of my other buns that has a flare up of her pastuerella that if her Baytril didn't work we would inject - but didn't go for that option with Mulberry.

He wasn't on anti-inflammatories but again the pasturella one was - and I independently (bad girl) started anti inflammatories on Mulberry yesterday - to see if it made him more comfortable.

I guess she did not swab as she is not my usual rabbit vet and although good with rabbits and super wonderful at surgery forgets that I am someone who is willing to throw everything money wise to get them better. (in fact he is insured anyway).

Will try and get conversation round to injectables and Zithromax when see her on Tuesday.

Thank you - sounds a very similar approach - she just skipped the ear drops on account of his nerves - I think she hoped the Baytril would sort it as it was a relatively 'new' infection.
