  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Metacam dosage for 3kg bunny & Enrocare

The vet today prescribed 3ml of cat metacam for George who is 3kg. This seems like a lot to me and we would almost empty the bottle if we did that. It's meant to be a 5 day course. We have given him up to the 3kg cat mark tonight, but we are confused because the dosage the vet said seems too high. We were also given Enrocare. The instructions say it needs to be diluted with water but the vet didn't say anything about that. Do you dilute it if anyone here uses it? Thank you.

We are not qualified to give dosage advice on prescription medications, you need to get back in touch with a vet

The cat metacam is a lower strength than the dog metacam, cat - Meloxicam 0.5mg/ml, dog -Meloxicam 1.5mg/ml. So more cat metacam is needed to give a therapeutic dose to a Rabbit. Rabbits require higher doses than cats or dogs as they metabolise Meloxicam much more quickly

Re the Enrocare/ Baytril (enrofloxacin) there are different routes of administration, including diluted in water.

Again it’s a POM. I have only had it prescribed to administer orally, undiluted or by injection. With the latter great care is needed as the drug is known to have the potential of causing a nasty skin reaction which can result in a sterile abscess.
