  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lillly Poo Problems - Loads of photos

Stator

Warren Veteran
Please can anyone review these photos and tell me if they have any ideas from experiences they have had in the past.

Lilly is 13 years old, completely incontinent
She is eating very well but lying uncomfortably almost all the time and looks to be in pain sometimes.
She moves about perfectly, runs up the staircase and moves about quickly and nimbly.
She is on Metacam and Zantac

For quite a while she has had these episodes, typically she would produce healthy looking poo, then stop pooing for a few hours, then produce messy poo.
You can feel her bloated when this happens. The vet did xray and ultrasounds on her and they showed nothing except that she had a small build up of poo.

This episode has been going on for about 5 days now, which is far longer than before.

She is beautiful  I don’t have any experience of this so I can’t advise but I’m sending lots of vibes xx

Thanks, she is my last one left :(

This is what she looked like when she was young and happy. She was always photogenic :)

The Exotics Vet can contact your current Vet and request the clinical history be sent to them, so that should not be a problem

To me it looks as though she has some motility problems associated with her cecum. This may be neurological in origin, given her already established urinary incontinence. Or it could be a mass of some sort. Is she having any unexplained weight loss ?

Long term use of Ranitidine can lead to dysbiosis of the cecum- the balance of 'good' bacteria being effected. This can lead to a myriad of GI tract problems.

Has she had any recent blood tests ? If she has been on Meloxicam long term this would be important to assess how her Liver and Kidney function is holding up. Meloxicam can be harsh on both organs over time, especially in elderly Rabbits. Given the fecal output abnormalities I am wondering if her Liver function may now be compromised.

I hope that you are able to find a Vet whom you are actually able to see during Consultation x

Thanks for the reply :)

She did lose some weight about 6 months ago, from 1.9 to 1.7. She is a little underweight

She has only been on zantac for a couple of weeks

My normal vet is the one that provides the out of hours service, so I'm very nervous of moving to another vet. Although the out of hours service isn't good, it's never an exotic vet. They often get the diagnosis wrong, but the overnight treatment is good until the exotic vets can provide a diagnosis in the daytime hours.

Very stressful

She is a wonderful age! If she is finding it hard to get comfortable it won't be very pleasant for her. I hope you can solve the problem soon.

She's gorgeous. I've seen Lopsy sitting in some of these positions recently: the bum-hunched sphinx especially. Paws out, front low, head medium-up and bum sort of up in the air. He'll sit like that for ages and I tell him he looks stupid (he's deaf, he can't hear my insults ;P). He's not done it so much more recently, since he's gone back to using the high-sided litter tray so I suspected it might be to do with arthritis. I do not have a diagnosis of arthritis because if he does have it doesn't seem to affect him enough to be noticeable, and the vet gave him a clean bill of health a fortnight ago (not that I mentioned anything). Thinking about it, he's taken to tucking his front feet under again, he seemed to do it less around the same time...

Not a solution for you, and maybe more (separate?) issues. Doesn't help with the poo situation. I do hope you can find a solution to make Lilly more comfy :)

One of my elderly buns (now passed) was on metacam for a long time. He had the unformed poos like in one of your photos and I found the protexin pro fibre pellets helped reduce them. He loved to eat them so it wasn’t any stress to change his diet. May be worth asking your vet. Also I found giving the metacam twice a day in divided doses helped prevent a cowpat type poo once a day.
Hope you can get something improved for her.

Thanks for all your replies. She had a mass, probably a tumour, deteriorated quickly before an operation could be arranged, and was put down yesterday.
