Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Leo is not himself today...Leo on a day visit U/D 24

*****POOP ALERT******
Nurse just rang. “Did Leo do any poops whilst at home?” She said.
“Not that I noticed” said I
“Oh, we’ll I’ve just taken his temperature and a small hard one was on its way out” she said.
Not quite a full stack, but I’ll take that. I know it’s possibly one that was there before. But, it means the lower intestines are also now starting to work.
Temperature is good. Pain score is also good. Nurse thinks that when we brought Leo home, he had little pain meds left as what he is getting is a constant slow drip feed. So whatever was in his system would have worn out meaning he was as I suspected, in pain/discomfort. So hopefully he’ll be more comfortable this evening and the extra 12-15 hours of rest will help with his body healing.

Whoop go Leo!

That's a great sign that things are starting to work again. Sounds like the trip home was just what he needed.

Sending vibes for more poop and continued recovery x

That's brilliant news Craig, his little visit obviously did him some good bless him. Hope you get a better nights sleep tonight xx

Sending lots more vibes for Leo and I hope that he has a restful and pain-free night.

Just caught up with this. So glad that Leo was allowed a home visit. I didn't realise vets did such things. At least now he knows that his home is still there and waiting for him. Topping up the vibes for your very special boy xxx

You know him so well, and knew he needed an early return to vets.
Sending vibes that Leo continues to improve and will gift you lots of poo.

Pepper is sending special well done vibes to Leo and we are all thinking of him here xxx

Specialist vet just rang (7:30) - she was keen to see Leo and see how he was.
Well, here’s what she said. She wants us to go and get Leo today. 10am to be precise. She said he’s “had enough” of being at the hospital (that makes 2 of us!!) and he’s hoping about and therefore he should be able to be in our environment. She wants Leo to have “as normal a day as possible” today including outside time if he wishes. Then, we are to take him back at 5pm and 11pm tonight for paracetamol injections. It can’t be given orally unfortunately.
Then again to take him back tomorrow at 8am for injections but he will spend the day there as we are both at work and I can’t get the day off.
She said that the ketamine is why he’s looking the way he is (see yesterday’s photo) as it has this effect - it’s a strong pain med. So when that works it’s way out of his system he should look much better.
The slight negative is that he’s only passed 2 poops all night so she needs him to start firing out the bum nuggets and I’ve got to somehow monitor his poop output today. Hmmmm?
He can’t have metacam due to the tummy wound (guess it reacts??) and he is eating ok so most of the signs are positive. He’s had the ear catheter in too long so taking that out will help him feel better and not pull on his head so much.
Looks like I need to get a shift on as I’ve got plenty to do and as it’s forecast to be a scorchio here I was hoping to get Leo some outside time BUT I need to be mindful of flies etc.
They are pleased with how he has improved so it’s important to build on that and not jeopardise any recovery at this point.
Photos and updates when he is back home.
Thank you for all your vibes everyone.
Craig xx

Brilliant news Craig, I'm sure some more home time will do him good, and if he can move more, hopefully that will get things moving through. More vibes and hugs xx

I'm really pleased that the specialist feels that Leo is well enough to come home :) I've not heard that about Metacam not being given with a tummy wound before and would be interested to know the reason. Is Leo on any gut medication, or is he meds-free at the moment?

I have to say that I'm surprised about this decision, but I can only judge by the updates. It does make some sense about the Ketamine making him look so unwell in yesterday's pic.

I think you will obviously monitor him closely during the day and will pick up on any signs that Leo is struggling without pain meds. although I guess he will have a Paracetamol injection before coming home. I think I would see how he gets on indoors before letting him outside, not least because I would want to be able to monitor any poo, which would be almost impossible outside. Just coming home and moving around inside without the support of stronger pain meds is a huge step for him after such an op.

Sending the little lad loads of vibes for today, especially poo vibes.

I suspect that Metacam is contraindicated due to its potential to cause gastric ulceration. Less of a risk in Rabbits than in other species as a Rabbit naturally has a very highly acidic stomach, so the stomach must have more natural protection to ulceration than may be the case in other species. Also, usually a Rabbit will never have an empty stomach. But of course a Rabbit who is/ has been anorexic may do. That’s my unqualified thoughts anyway :)
