Is the hutch safe?

Hi my boyfriends rabbit had to be put down as it contracted myxomatosis, got a new hutch today for the new rabbit but they want to used the infected hutch as a run. Would it be possible if the hutch was disinfected and left outside for a couple of weeks that they would be able to use it as a run or shall the destroy it as it is a risk.

Thank you, please reply xx

take the hutch apart and create a run simple,
they not got the new rabbit yet but they are getting it vaccinated straight away x

Hi

I personally wouldnt risk it as vaccinating doesnt mean the bun can't be infected - it just means he/she has more chance of recovering. There is no vacs which will give a 100% barrier against myxi.

To give the new bun a comfortable life and in line with RSPCA/RWA guidelines, please make sure the hutch is at least 6ft x 2ft x 2ft and the run 6ft x 4ft x 2ft

This size will also allow you to have a pair of buns which is preferable as rabbits do not generally like being kept alone.

Is the "new" bun from a rescue or elsewhere?
