holiday boarding?

What have you all lost your minds, you would trust your house and you animals with someone who you chat to on the internet

I'm with Tree. It's a bad idea (sorry).

There's no saying that even if you trusted them (and why would you?) that they'd have time to go to your house/space to have the rabbits at their house when you needed it. And everyone has different standards of care, which might not meet yours.

if you want to arrange something as individuals thats fair enough, but not sure about making a thread.

with boarding you dont need insurance. you can get it, but you dont need it to be. to cut a looong story short, its cus they r 'small animals';

That is very true, but any decent reputable boarding facility should have it and be more than happy to show you the paperwork to prove it and the certificate of insurance.

I am often suprised at how easily people hand us over keys to their property to look after their pets without asking for any references or checks etc.
We have enhanced CRB checks here as do some other places, but can you have that same guarantee and peace of mind ,and the prospect of a legal battle if things go wrong with someone you speak to but possibly havent even met off a forum.

Perhaps as a variation, could there be a list of all the holiday boarding places/pet sitting people that are on the forum, perhaps with a web link and/or an idea of location?

Sure it might be a risk trusting people from the internet. But no more risky than some people who set themselves up as boarders (not talking about most respectable boarders here!:D )
After all, how do you know you can trust someone just because they put their name in the phone book or set up a website.

I think it would be a good way of getting in touch with people in the same area who have rabbits. It would be particularly good to have as a back-up for when you cant find a good boarding place. Asking friends is all very well, but half the time they have no idea about rabbits. I think it would also be a good idea for boarders to be able to advertise on the thread.

So long as RU clearly states that it takes no responsibility for either party, and all agreements are at your own risk.

If people are willing to take the risk, then it should be up to them. It's just the same with ebay or freecycle or many other online sites e.g. looking for housemates, etc.

You should develop a code of safety first though (for both people offering and looking) e.g.
  • Adults only (anyone under 18 must get their parents to go with them)
  • Take friends with you when you meet them
  • If you're giving someone access to your house, make sure you know where they live/work
  • Agree a standard of care for the bunnies and what should happen in an emergency (e.g. feeding & cleaning rules, who your vet is, contact numbers, etc)
  • Maybe inform your vet that you're going away, but you'll cover any fees on your return?

An alternate idea would be for rescue centres to maintain a list of people in the local area who would be interested in offering/using the service. They would only allow trusted people on the list e.g. people they have homechecked, people who've been referred by someone they know, etc. They could charge a small fee for being on or using the list - so a useful way to make a bit of cash.

Just an idea. Personally I send my rabbits to board with my mum :D

That was my second quibble with the idea, but I didn't want to seem like a total party pooper :D, although I know a lot of you on here have met through bunny runs and rescues etc

Great idea =D Think you are probs to far away for us because we need someone for when we go camping x oh well
