  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Fern seeing out of hours vet for swollen eye

She's got an appointment tomorrow morning. She's still antibiotics and metacam but I think she maybe needs more antibiotics since it took 3 types plus surgery last time, whether it's related or not. I think she is a bit quieter in herself :(

Poor girl. :( I hope her appointment tomorrow will be helpful, and that you can make a plan for treating it so that it hopefully stays away. Rabbit abcesses are such awful things. :(

I'm sorry to hear the abscess has returned. :( I hope it can be defeated quickly this time. Vibes on the way for wee Fern. xxxxx

So sorry to read it returned, yet I hope now that a longer course of abx witt keep it away. Sending vibes for her vet appointment.

Thank you all.
She's booked in on Monday to have it drained, and we'll be starting penicillin injections then too. She also has baytril, metronidazole and metacam.

I hope draining the abscess and being on the medications will be enough to get rid of it and keep it from coming back. Sending lots more vibes for Fern.

Topping up the vibes. How is she doing in herself? She’s a strong determined rabbit :thumb:

Thank you! She certainly is! I sometimes look at her and think oh she looks a bit sad/she's feeling it, but then others she's eating hay and acting as normal! I think maybe cos the abscess is above her eye it's affecting her facial expression making me think she's not looking good/quite herself, if that makes sense!

Sorry I've not seen the updates. I remember when Noodle had her eye out an abscess formed in the socket. She returned for another op which was totally successful - wishing the same for Fern

I think she does have a stern look about her at times, so hopefully it’s just her glaring at you for taking her to the vets again! Keeping my fingers crossed that it goes well xx

Thank you both. Yes that's true! When the nurse called she said she was ready to go home as being very feisty with them! It's more of an open wound this time, but she seems ok, we have also been given intrasite gel to put in it which I wouldn't have thought of. I don't exactly know what it is, but doesn't contain anything dangerous to rabbits, I think it just aids in wound healing as we dispense it from work for wounds that have opened up a bit etc
