  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Eating after spaying

Thanks for your advice everyone - just a quick update

I rang the vet at tea time on wed because they still had done no poops and it had been 24hours and the vet said all they could do was give a gut stimulant and send them home so I rang another vet who said to bring them straight in and she listened to their gut and said that both had gone into stasis :( She gave them fluids, pain relief and 2 gut stimulants and she syringe fed them throughout the night and by the next morning they had improved loads and both were eating a little bit of food

I got both my bunnies back last night because their guts sounded normal and they seem to be doing fine - eating fresh grass and doing little poops. I have painkillers and a gut stimulant to give for the next 5 days. Im really annoyed that the first vet wasn't prepared to do much for my babies.

Also the first few poops that the bunnies did were a bit watery and they have dried on their tails - any idea of the best way to remove these??

Oh I am so pleased you had the courage to ring another vet - well done you! That's great you found a decent vet second time....am so pleased they are both ok, been wondering how they were. :)
After stasis first droppings are often quite runny or excess caecotrophs due to the caecum refiring up again properly and bacterial overgrowth etc... best way to clean a bun's bum is with a damp flannel, sensitive baby wipe or just comb the dried bits out our tease out gently with your fingers (or carefully snip off) If it is really bad then a gentle bottom bath in a very shallow bowl of warm water (sitting only bun's bum in it) and drying thoroughly after...but best to avoid unless necessary as is an additional stress.
