  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Diahrrea?

Hello guys. If you saw my last post by any chance you’ll know my bun had been only eating hay for a while and i slowly implemented pellets back into her diet, a new brand actually, and about 4 days into that and having given her the probably most pellets she had gotten these days yesterday, she pooped this today. I have kept the amounts i give her well below the 1/8 cup recommendation due to her weight (3 pounds). Is this diahrrea? I live in Puerto Rico and her vet/the only available vet i can go to cannot see her today ☹️

Looks like cecotropes with a bit of hair. They are the other type of bunny poo, and are normally eaten so you wouldn't see them. They typically appear like 'bunches of grapes'. So no, it doesn't look like diarrhoea to me. Excess cectropes are sometimes caused by certain brands of pellets, or not enough hay in the diet (ie too many pellets). Stick to the hay. Reduce the pellets, and / or go back to the previous brand?

I would suggest grooming more to remove loose fur (maybe she's moulting at the moment?) and stop it being ingested - that's the stringy bits between the poo.

I would also remove any cardboard that may be being chewed. If swallowed, it can cause gut blockages. I'm assuming that's what the background bits are.
