  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Deaf mini lop

When last at the vet, I asked if anything could be done about Archie's deafness and she said there isn't. She looked into his ears and said they looked very healthy. Is it true that nothing can be done and it can just be expected in lop rabbits? He's nearly 9 years old.

He still "hears" though vibrations though his feet, I think feet are another kind of ears for rabbits, but he's often scared by unexpected things when snoozing on his balcony (yep, the bunny shed has a bunny balcony). He's more scared of the dark now too, he relies on Millie to warn him of danger.

Is this a build up of ear wax? Can't it be vacuumed out like a human's?

Thank you.

Lops are often hard of hearing. A build up of wax can make it worse. But is important not to start putting ear cleaning solutions into the ears unless specifically advised to do so by a Vet who has examined the Rabbit.

My bridge bun Treacle was stone deaf, you could clap loudly behind her head, and she wouldn't react. The vac never bothered her either, in fact she would try to climb on it  I always made sure to keep in her sight line when approaching her, so she didn't spook. Her ears remained clear and healthy all through her life. It sounds like your bunny is coping well, and nice that he has a friend to rely on :)

Sorry, only just seen these replies. No, the vet didn't mention any earwax, just said they were healthy ears. Yes, I do a lot of standing at some distance until he's seen me, or Millie nudges him because he can get freaked out if I'm suddenly there, all huge. I mean huge compared to him, obviously!
