Darcy - Triple fits - Rectal Valium used 22/12/11 p74

I'll try and explain it as best I can. He ends up on his side twisting and writhing in pain. His hind legs are going crazy as if trying to scratch his ears but his body is twisting all over the place. His little mouth starts biting at the air or himself. So far luckily only removed fur no bites to himself.:cry::cry::cry::cry:

oh no not my mr darcy :(

oh hun im so sorry..nosey rubs to big old boy....and hugs for you xx

Read your post above hun...when bertie started having seizures...2 vets said it could be a pain spasm or a nerve trapped etc.

Another vet put him on anti epilepsy meds and gave me tubes of rectal valium to help the fit shorten and stop.

when he comes round fromt his fit..what is his behaviour like? with bertie you wouldnt notice really as he goes a bit quiet then sits up washing his dewlap furiously..except on closer inspection..hes not even making contact with it.

within the hour he seems fine...so odd.

maybe ask your vet for a stronger painkiller? im sure tramadols been mentioned at some point on this board.

All i can do is send vibes a plenty xxx

That doesn't sound like muscle spasms from arthritis to me but i'm no vet :?

I was just going to suggest you PM Purplebumble or Hugos There as they both have had bunnies that have fitted, but I see Debbie has already replied above. Could you ask for a referral to an exotics specialist for Darcy? Even if your vet does it on your behalf by phone/email/fax without an actual appointment needed? I can't remember but has Darcy had bloods run and Xrays to diagnose his arthritis? (Sorry i've forgotten so much )

How is he today? x

When Darcy has the fit straight after he runs away then sits and starts licking/grooming his dewlap for a little while then he just relaxes and acts like normal as if nothing has happened. I usually always give him extra metacam after a fit as I have been seeing them as a pain spasm. I give him extra 1ml to 2ml (if really bad).

Daily Darcy is having just under 4ml of metacam. This is high but its the only level up till now that stopped him having pain spasms.

The rest of the time he is eating, moving around, snoozing, asking for treats, fuss and being the boss as usual. He doesn't act depressed or anything.

Please don't shout at me but I'm scared going back to the vet because they said last time that if he starts showing pain after the big increase in metacam that he should be pts.:cry::cry::cry: Am I being selfish or do you really think that I can push for a change in pain med or treatment??

I pushed for xrays ages ago. They showed he had spondylosis and osteo-arth. He has spurs in a few of his spine and his hips are the wrong shape.:cry::cry: He had bloods done months ago and they came back okay.

I'm having trouble finding a pet accupuncturist in my area. I even tried the really expensive one I use on emergencies and they don't do it which surprised me. Anyone know of any in London??

It is the CAT Metacam you are giving isnt it ??????????????

Two of our Vets do Acupuncture (Twickenham Veterinary Surgery)

Originally it was cat met and a much smaller dose but this was not helping him as he started having spasms/fits several times a day that lasted seconds. I took him back and they put him on a much higher dose and the dog met. It was decided that although this high dose could cause probs with his liver etc, he does not have much time left and keeping him out of pain and comfortable is more important.

He has been fine today (touch wood) and no spasms/fits so far.

Thank you for the Twick vets recommendation. I have also found one now in Hyde Park. I will check them out.

Please don't forget to send your special RU vibes for my precious boy Darcy going to see the famous Cristobel tomorrow.

We met the lovely Cristobel today. She was very flattered when I told her how famous she is here on RU. :D

The acupuncture session did not go well. Darcy hated it.:cry: When she started putting pins in his hip area he went berserk and literally "flew" off the table and Cristobel only just managed to catch him before he hit the floor. :( She left him alone on the floor for a while to calm down but it was decided acupuncture is not for him. We could try it again but given his reaction - and the stress of the journey which turned out to be about an hour and half both ways its not right. :(

Cristobel's opinion on Darcy's pain spasms/fits is that they are probably due to some form of epilepsy. She has recommended I ask my vet for off-licence Gabapentin to take along with the metacam. If not Gabapentin then try Tramadol but she said this is can make the animal very woozy.

She agreed with Darcy being on such a high dose of metacam as its the only way to keep him pain free. He is not going to be with us for that much longer so it is the most important thing to keep him pain free.

The good news is that she said Darcy was in very good condition.:D His fur is lovely and fluffy and good condition, botty nice and clean etc. Most importantly she said he has no muscle wastage  which you could expect in a bun his age esp french lop.

So if anyone on here has any ideas or knowledge or experience of using Gabapentin or Tamadol please share as although Cristobel recommended them she said she had no experience of using them on a rabbit and said I should ask you guys :) for feedback just in case!

Oh I am sorry that the Acupuncture did not work out. At least you now know you have tried that avenue.

I wonder if your Vet could contact the Bristol Rabbit Clinic for some telephone advice re the medications C mentioned.

I really hope that Darcy can remain 'seizure free' for as long as possible.

my old vet contacted richard saunders at bristol...john chitty AND edinburgh.....and hes on phenobarbitol....and the 18/19kg dog dose of metacam.

he has a phenobarb pill in morning and another one at night...rolled up in a treat as the liquid was so awful and stressed him out so much.

i have to say it definately sounds like darcy had a fit....its so scary when you see it happen...berties got longer each time and he had two togehter once which vet said would kill him if it happened again....so hence i have rectal valium tubes for him n case.

poor darcy...bertie wouldnt have that either:( hed get too stressed too...and i agree about the journey..when i had to take bertie to see john chitty several times over his eye ulcer..the journey via the animal ambulance was so long for him there and back....

berties never had xrays or blood tests for is arthritis...but thats cos i guess of his pasturella and breahting probs for a ga.

Vicky..thank you for mentioning me hun...youre the arthritis expericned one....hopefully everyone else who has buns or has had buns with epilepsy/seizures....arthritis....spine probs etc...can shed more light with their experiences.

his xrays can be sent via email to john chitty and richard saunders..its what my old vet saski did:thumb: with merlins.

i know hun...no one knows how much time...we just keep willing bertie to try and make it for christmas..and as pain free as poss. same with merlin too.

poor old soul..darcy has always been one of my fave ru buns....:(

if you can catch darcys seizure on film.....then show it to the vet..they make me so mad..my other vet told me berties was a pain spasm......i was so mad..i knew it was a seizure..so did other vets when i described it.

we cant let bertie get over excited or over happy or stressed as it lowers his threshild and he has a seizure....we used to rough house him rubbing his back like a dog..he loved it....then the seizures occured twice with it and the vet said dont let him get too over excited....and he really misses his back rubs...:(
so thats the other thing....no over stimulation.

they wanted to scan berties brain to find out if it was a pasturella abscess at the root of it..but wouldnt because of his pasturella and breathing probs.....they just said metacam dampens down the inflammation....and the epilepsy pills should help the seizures...and they have so far so good.

yes metacams toxic long term..so are epilepsy meds....dont i know that...ive tried so darned many myself.
its odd she didnt recommend phenobarb...its so popular eveb with dogs...and other buns on here i know have it too.

only suggestion is to ring round diff vets and ask if they have a vet who is familar with rabbit sezures and pain casued by arhtritis etc.

i hope my poor old man darcy has some help soon and that you can spend a bit more time with him...every moments so strained when you sit and think about it..best to try let him be himself as much as poss...its difficult i know.
yes bertie so far has no signs of muscle wastage..just his hind leg looks a bit odd.

vibes for mr darcy...and hugs for you xx
