Ironically I have been recommended today to go for some private preventative dental treatment - optional, rather than necessary at this stage - which in theory could cost up to £1,000 (worst case I hope!).

The funny thing is I would totally hesitate about justifying spending that sort of money on my own healthcare, but if it came to the buns I would almost certainly go ahead (though I guess the preventative/treatment thing would be a weighing factor) - but even so it made me laugh to think how my head works!!

Sorry not meaning to hijack but just thought it was ironic.

i didn't vote because it isn't that we can 'afford it' - its just that we have put ourselves heavily in debt for it.

We were unfortunate in a way as we had had the buns insured for several years but decided to stop because premiums wee so much and lots of people said just to 'put something aside' -
We were then hit with Willow's gut blockage (urgent surgery etc), Parsleys very complex shattered leg (own vet away so even more expensive specialist referral, then re-pinning and re-op) AND Damson's kidney operation - and all that went before in the way of diagnostics and treatments.

We now pay the monthly premiums for everyone so although our monthly out-goings are high we won't be faced with a £4,000 bill again! - though Damson is excluded as too old to start.

So although we cannot afford it - we would have completeley re-mortgaged the house to pay (in fact we have taken out a re-mortgage on part of it - setting our retirement back several MORE years - looks like we will be 75 before we pay it now!).

I guess we are lucky to be able to raise funds - but it does make me feel a bit low when on other threads people say how they would never get into bad debt with credit cards etc etc - ours are entirely due to our animals.

Yeah!! i just refused to pay £400 for varifocal glasses and will carry on with just reading glassas as couldn't afford the outlay!! Yet I paid at least £400 in vets fees in the last couple of weeks !!

That just shows a huge commitment and care for your animals - and is very moving how much you love them. Its not easy to make those decisions at all because at the end of the day you do have to be able to live and keep yourselves above water - think this must be what so hard for rescues. :(

Not on my own I couldn't. But fortunately my parents are quite understanding about the rabbits and if it really came to it they would help.

Same here - I balk at spending £50 on a dietician/herbalist/whatever for my ME but the rabbits? Sure. £50 is a drop in the ocean as far as they're concerned!

I voted no, because I don't have the available money, BUT if I needed to, I'd find it...would probably have to get a credit card!

I couldn't afford it. Grim costs me about £100 a month in vet bills so I have no spare cash to save. But, I would sell everything I own to get the money.

If i needed to i'd find the money. I'd either put it on credit card or ask my parents for a loan if Pet Plan didn't cover it.

I agree that if it was for me personally it would be different but the buns would get what they need, no question.

Well - it is our own choice that we have so many . . . well I think it was . . tbh I can't quite remember how it happened :lol::lol: seem to remember just starting with one bun - who needed a partner then another couple needed a home, then another needed special care so we took her on and she needed a partner , and then . . . at least 2 are local strays 'handed in' to us (we are NOT a rescue:roll::roll:) who then never moved on (the Blue Cross laughed when i asked whether they could take them!!). . and so on!

I have no idea how Rescues manage - SO hard to turn anybun away . . last time we were looking for a male for a lonely female bunny widow we ended up taking on two as we felt so sorry for them both! . . and then had to get a female for the 'spare' one :lol:

I voted yes, but it's not a case of I have £1000.00 to spare, it's a case of I would find it (use the Bunny's emergency credit card)

When Alfie started his breathing problems I spent around £500.00 on his tests, but we decided against a referal in the end as it wouldn't have given us many more answers. If I had to I would have found the money.

Maybe I should have reworded it to, could you find the money if needed even if it involved selling your grandmother, rather than a simple yes  I didn't think many people would have £1000 sitting around waiting for their rabbit to become sick, so I expected most of those who voted yes to be struggling to find it.

I'm 16, so on my own no! My parents COULD afford £1000 from savings etc, but I doubt they would want to as they're 'just' rabbits. If it would be a one of op, good prognosis, with the rabbit definite to be 100% right afterwards, I'd do my best to pursuade them and pay what I could myself.
At the end of the day it'd be my parents decision though, but it could be afforded.

I voted yes - but like most others I don't have the cash. I have credit cards that would cover anything the insurance wouldn't. I know some people don't like to use them, but for me personally I wouldn't be without it. I don't use it for everyday things, its for emergencies only, has a high credit allowance and, thankfully, a low interest rate.

I voted no because off the bat there is no way I could bring up that sort of money. But I would no doubt scrounge and beg relatives and get there in the end.

I have updated the other thread, doesn't seem like an op will be successful :(

I'm sorry about Elwood - he is, to me, a special RU bunny......

Regarding your question; I'm sure that we would do it but it wouldn't be easy. However; to put things in perspective - we have just spent a lot of money (£400 +) on their outdoor set-up - some of which I'd saved for and some of which John has paid for. So we could do it I'm sure.

I would consider everything at the time - I spent a lot of money of one of my first chinchillas when knowing what I do now I would have had him pts as I feel all the vet did was prolong his suffering. I don't regret the money spent but I do regret the fact he probably suffered more than he should have done. :(

I have had lots of different animals over the years but these bunnies have stolen my heart in a way I never expected them to. I feel that I would move heaven and earth to get them better should anything happen to them..... I'm currently trying to put money into a savings account whilst they are young and healthy (same with the piggies) and they are insured.

But the whole 'vet bills' issue is the sole reason I would not want to take any more rabbits. I have been tempted - recently very sorely tempted - but I know I can cope with two buns' bills where a third and a fourth I think I'd be worrying about 'what ifs'...... :?

If only I had a grandmother still to sell . . .
