  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Blocked tear ducts - facial sores

Buzzwizz619

Old man Bobby (RSPCA bun) has completly blocked tear ducts we tried to flush then when he had a dental a few months ago but they are literally obliterated due to sever neglect in his previous home resulting in excessive facial sores.

Any tips on how to reduce sores reoccurring and the best treatment for them when they develop?

I'd love to be able just wipe his eyes multiple times a day but unfortunately due to his health issues I have to poke and pride at him alot and messing with his eyes is unfortunately more than he generally will tolerate and he bites hard!

At the moment I'm trying to keep them dry and the fur brushed to stop it matting but because the skin is so fragile the fur comes out in clumps and sometimes skin too 😔

When it's sore a put abit of sudocrem on to sooth it but it washes it off and it's not great to be ingested. The vet advised bathing with hibi but it's abit close to his eye and runs the risk of getting it in his eye

Any experience?

I expect it is elongated tooth roots that have caused the blocked tear ducts. Unfortunately this is a common feature of Dental disease, especially in brachycephalic (flat faced) Rabbits such as Mini Lops and Nethies.

Regarding managing the eyes, personally I would not use sudocrem and certainly not hibiscrub. Cleaning off the dried discharge thoroughly may initially need to be done under sedation if it is severe. Once the skin tears it can cause infection to set in and of course it will be extremely sore.

Then when the affected areas are clear of 'gunk' (and probably fur too) applying something like Lacri-Lube over the area affected.

This will need to be done at least 3 times a day, but should be less of an ordeal than lots of eye bathing. The latter will still be needed, but not so often and by using warm sterile saline solution.

CHECK ALL OF THE ABOVE WITH THE VET FIRST THOUGH
