Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bertie weightloss

Bertie weighs 2.83 kg. He was 2.86kg at the vets last week. I think different scales could account for such a small variation. Bertie was not at all pleased at being put on the scales!

Wonder if there are any weight gain foods I can give Bertie that won’t give him excess caecotrophs ... not sure the small portions of readigrass / alfalfa will help much.

Do you mean they are giving him excess cecals even if fed in very small quantities ?

Is Bertie actually underweight ? Have you established if his weight is now stable ie that he is not actually losing any more weight after the initial weight loss ?

What pellet feed does he have and exactly how much ?

Yes, even just a small handful gives him excess caecotrophs.

He is on Science Selective house rabbit. An egg cup morning and evening.

I am not going to weigh him again until Saturday.

I would wait and see if his weight is stable. In recent photos he does not look underweight, but obviously it’s not possible to judge accurately from just a photo. Personally if he is now maintaining his weight I wouldn’t worry about trying to get him to put weight on unless the Vet says he is underweight. It is far better for him to be on the lean side, especially if he does have some arthritis.

Bertie weighs 2.81kg this week. This is another loss but only 20g. He is absolutely raging at me for capturing him and plonking him on the scales. Thumps, side-eye, refusing his tea (not for too long though).

20g isn’t much, his weight could vary by that amount depending on if he had a full or an empty bladder.

Hope his rage was short lived !! X
