Anaesthetic risk in rabbits - genetic links?

Shimmer

Does anyone know if there are any genetic links to unexpected anaesthetic deaths in rabbits?
Are siblings at increased risk, or the same as the general rabbit population?

I lost a young, healthy rabbit during a routine castration this week. Op went OK, he just didn't recover from the anaesthetic and died on the table, despite efforts to save him. I have the opportunity to have a full sibling - just not sure if it is the sensible thing to do.

I don't know the answer I'm afraid, but really really sorry to hear that your bunny didn't make it through the op. R.I.P little bunny x

Really sorry for your tragic loss  Did the Vet perform a PM ? That would possibly give some indication of whether there were any cardiac or renal abnormalities which could then potentially be considered to be genetic in origin. Was the Bunny a Giant ?

Thanks, Jane. Was hoping for a response from you.

No PM - was offered a specialist one, but didn't take it up.

Bunny was a 9 month old small lionhead with no known health issues. I had him since 8 weeks old. Saw both parents - assumed not to be related and an accidental litter. Delayed neutering due to vet not doing routine ops during lockdown, and he was a late developer (6 months, and still an undescended testicle). He was lonely and v hormonal, so went ahead rather than delay another couple of months. Was waiting to bond him with others. Vet suspected a blood clot - blood darkened at one point during the op. I may ask more questions next week.

An embolism is a possibility but obviously it is just speculation. Losing a Bunny to a routine neuter is especially tragic

So very sorry. I still haven't had my Bertie done but he's a single housebunny.

Must have been an awful shock to lose your boy. Do hope you'll find peace in having another rabbit in the future.
