  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

After spaying earlier today need help!

earlier today my rabbit was spayed. She’s a female and when I got home I realize she had this huge lump fire and Sion. It doesn’t seem like it’s causing her any pain but I’m really worried and I wonder if I should take her back I can’t call the vet because it’s closed. IMG_7933.jpeg

It’s hard to assess the amount of swelling from a photo, I’d need to see it irl and feel it. If it is an actual lump then the Vet needs to examine her. A rare complication of a spay is that it herniates. This would need surgical correction. But a degree of soft tissue swelling is normal and should resolve within 5-7 days. You should have been given a supply of a non steroidal anti inflammatory analgesic to administer daily for about 5 days. This is ESSENTIAL. I would call the Vet to make them aware of your concern about the swelling. As I said, it’s not possible to be certain if there is a hernia from looking at a photo. It’s important that she is eating and pooping, I hope that she is.
