  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

10 hours to castration

I would take it off as there should be some healing by now even if he pulls the stitches out. Maybe check with your Vet first. Glad they are eating!

Matrons Report Day four post-op!

They have had a quiet night and are eating and drinking well. As soon as you put the syringe next to Dillon he grabs it and chews - Cuthbert fights his medication though. The bruising is coming through on Dillons scrotal sack, but the swelling is very very slowly going down.

We are having issues as Dillon is weeing and pooing in his babygrow - not good for him at all - any ideas please would be welcome.

Thank you all for your vibes it really means a lot

If he's weeing and pooing in it, then I would remove it now and keep a careful eye on him.

I'm pleased to hear that things are going in the right direction at last - you must be very relieved! :)

Much improved this evening poo captured in babygrow was normal rather than sticky squashy poo. He is much better in himself but fighting me like mad regarding the clothing. If I do take off the babygrow he is biting himself and has again managed to damage his sack. Vets on monday so I think the babygrow will stay till then

Thank you all for your support and encouragement

Yes you know best - on it stays :)

Overnight vibes and I hope all remains well for him. You've been through a lot, haven't you? x

I was wrong and so was the vet - Dillon is in a bad way and is due back in surgery tomorrow.

The babygrow as indicated by Tonibun was a bad idea, it got urine soaked and Dillon has tried to clean it - in the process he has now sloughed the skin off his testical leaving it an open and bloody wound. The vets want to restitch it tomorrow but fear that there is not enough good flesh around the area - if this is the case they are recommending PTS - I am devastated and not really knowing which way to turn. Dillon needs the op to close the wound but if he doesnt he will have weeks and weeks of healing.

He is wearing a buster collar so I am hand feeding him two hourly to ensure his gut is active. My issue is I am back at work on Tuesday............... not sure which way to turn - oh and its not a rabbit savvy vet in surgery tomorrow.

I am so sorry to read this. Poor Dillon and poor you :( Sending loads of good wishes and vibes for tomorrow.

Different circumstances, but I think Santa had an issue with her rabbit Delilah, who had Myx, which left an area on her nose which wouldn't t heal. I'll try and find the details for you.

ETA This is the thread http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/s...lah-and-her-persistent-scab&highlight=Delilah

I suggest that if tomorrow's op isn't 100% successful, you could send Santa a PM.

I'm gutted to read this latest update.

First and foremost, please try not to be too hard on yourself, you have done an amazing job at caring for Dillon and you have gone above and beyond to make him comfortable. I'm not sure what to suggest regarding the surgery, but with regards to work, are you about to leave Dillon at the vets for 24/7 care? I know it will be more costly, but it may help ease some of the worry.

Sending hugs.

I'm so sorry to hear this :(

Are you confident in your vet? If so then you will have to trust their judgement tomorrow and hope and pray for the best outcome.

Is there anyone living nearby that can maybe take him off your hands for a few days if it's necessary for the wound to heal and you can't be with him as much as you feel you'd need to be?

Thank you for the links, my dog walker will come in and check Dilly every two hours but only after lunch, Mark and I both work shifts so it will be a bit of a jigsaw but we will do it. Off to read Santa's post. Thank you again.

Oh no, so sorry to hear this. :( Poor Dillon, sending lots of vibes for him and hugs to you. Can’t imagine how stressed and worried you are xx

I'm so sorry you are in this situation:cry: if the vet tomorrow is not rabbit savvy can they refer you to one that is, or ask advice from one?

Sending lots of vibes xx

Nicky you always have such brilliant suggestions. I really hope Dillon doesn't need drastic surgery but can heal up naturally x

MightyMax I remembered seeing alternatives to collars when Rosie was so ill . . I so hope Dillon doesn't need surgery again either.

I am sorry to hear of the post surgical complications that Dillon has had. I dont know if your Vet is an Exotics Specialist, but perhaps it may be a good idea to seek a referral to an ES before having to make any awful decisions. There are a few things that may be able to be done both surgically and then post operatively to try to achieve wound healing, but it may involve the skills of both surgical and dermatology experts. Also, intensive post operative care as an inpatient would probably be essential as it may include Dillon being sedated for the initial recovery stage. So IV fluids and ongoing syringe/nasogastric tube feeding may also be essential.

I am sure that you will do whatever is best for Dillon. It is obviously a very distressing time for both of you x

Sorry I appear to have been a bit waffly in my previous post - I was so upset when I wrote it. I will try and explain better.

Operation was Wednesday - one of Dillons testicals got a massive haematoma. treated with pain relief and cold packs. Paul (rabbit savvy vet did op)
Thursday Dillon bit the testicle sack so badly and ripped a stitch out, back to the vets the remaining two stitches were taken out by Craig (not rabbit savvy) now on antibiotics
Sunday - Dillon was pulling at his babygrow - changed him before I went to work - noticed a little blood, approx 1cms long by 1/2 cm wide. Two hours later my daughter came blood on babygrow (with urine soak) 6cm x 4cms. She rang vet - no rabbit savvy vet on till 4pm. Babygrow removed and my daughter sat in run till 3.30pm met me at the vets.
Saw Jenny vet Dillon who took Dillon off into the back and cleaned the wound and put on buster collar. No rabbit vet on till Monday afternoon - in the meantime Craig (non rabbit savvy) will ring me to discuss options - he will not be doing the op it will be Cheryl who is the exotic specialist.
They will try and clean and restitch but given Dillons only 14 weeks old and is not the strongest of rabbits and dependant on the condition of his skin which is now sloughing off if they get him under anaesthetic and all is not good they have asked me to sign a form for PTS - I can not have Dillon in pain but I am distraught at the idea of loosing him

This morning he is hunched in his blanket but I have syring feed him warm wet pellets and hand fed him veg, he has poo'd and wee'd normally and has eaten some hay. The buster collar is frustrating him and he keeps falling over - he sort of sits up on his back legs and leans back to try and get out of the collar thus falling backwards.
Cuthbert is really stressed with all this and keeps stamping - there is only a piece of chicken wire between them. He wont come near me and if I try and pass him food he runs into his tunnel (I cant reach him in there) the tunnel is tied to the side of the run and is about 5 feet long and goes up/down and round the run. Cuthbert is still on reduced exercise from his castration on wednesday.

Thank you all for your help and comments - it means such a lot, you have no idea how comforting you have all been.
