Suggested Hutches?

Dan22

New Kit
Looking in to keeping two rabbits, and obviously i'd rather not go small with the hutch. Anyone have any examples or suggestions of suitable hutches? Is a run better than a second floor? 6ft long is the recommended length right?

Yep, 6 ft is the recommended minimum length, and it also needs to be 2ft deep and 2ft high (or bigger). Plus the RWAF and RSPCA recommend a minimum of an 8 x 4 x 2 permanently attached run also. My personal preference is to cover the roof of the run too so that the bunny/bunnies can make the most use of the space in the most types of weather possible.

You want to go with good quality wood - timber, plywood etc rather than cheap woods used by pets at home and the like.

This comes highly recommended by a lot of people: http://www.happyhutch.co.uk/rabbit-hutches-runs/sykes-rabbit-hutch-run-combo-detail. The 6 x 2 x 2 with 6 x 6 run is £200 with £15 delivery I believe, and you can extend it up to a 6 x 10ft run with an extension now or in the future: http://www.happyhutch.co.uk/rabbit-hutches-runs/sykes-rabbit-hutch-combo-run-extension-detail.

They also do a ground level hutch: http://www.happyhutch.co.uk/rabbit-hutches-runs/rabbit-hutch-run-in-front-detail. Not sure if the extension can be added to this hutch but I'm sure it could if you tell them that it's to attach to that hutch rather than the skyes combo.

Boyles pet housing also do excellent size setups: http://www.boylespethousing.co.uk/rabbit-housing/single-large-rabbit-hutches.html.

It's definitely worth going for better quality to begin with rather than spending money on a cheap hutch which only lasts a few years - all these should last 10+ years as long as the roofing felt is maintained if it gets scruffy and it's coated with cuprinol etc. To help make it last you can also lay linoleum flooring on the bottom of the inside of the hutch and seal around it with clear bathroom sealant - this makes the floor waterproof and wipe clean. The floor is often the first thing to go after getting wet a lot, so that's a great way to make it last.

I have to recommend Ryedale.

They are fantastic! Look beautiful and really good quality too.

^^ I'll second that recommendation. I love my Ryedale hutch.

The quality is second to none and they probably use some of the thickest wood I have seen on hutches. They are expensive, but I view mine as an investment in the welfare of my bunnies. Rob will make you anything you want if you don't see the right hutch on his website.

One thing I would advise you to go as big as you can afford, as mine is 6x2x2 but I wish I had gotten it 8x2x2 now.

Happy Hutch are well recommended. Their two best ones are this one (use the drop-down to select the bigger sizes): http://www.happyhutch.co.uk/rabbit-hutches-runs/sykes-rabbit-hutch-run-combo-detail
And this one, which is the same but with larger hutches if you wanted to give them a bit more space or had larger rabbits: http://www.happyhutch.co.uk/rabbit-hutches-runs/large-sykes-rabbit-hutch-run-combo-detail

Here are the welfare guidelines for rabbit housing: http://www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk/ahutchisnotenough.htm There's also a video on that page explaining why they need that amount of space.

You could also convert a shed or playhouse, which is much nicer to clean out when it's raining and allows you to sit in there with them: http://www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk/shedconversion.htm

If it's for outside I wouldn't recommend the one called Fort William that a lot of shops sell. I've got it for indoors and it's perfect for that but it's not sturdy enough for outdoors.

Thanks for all the suggestions, really helpful. So far i'm liking the look of something similar to this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/6ft-Kendal-Rabbit-Hutch-Run/dp/B00H4ZI0A6/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top, seems good quality and is similar to what i initially wanted, a large hutch with a run underneath.

Hey, do you have a site?

My site is being built right now as we speak but if you have Instagram and search thehutchmanagram you can see my products there.
Here is my version of the type you put up a link for but 8ft wide on 3ft high runs. The customer wanted them left plain so they could paint them.
These look nice in 6ft x2ft x2ft on a 2ft high x6ft x 8ft run.
Pm me if you need to know anything its no problem.
