If i had to rehome, I would put adverts everywhere to try and find the best home. I would obviously check the new home, but I don't think it matters where you put your advert, but I personally think you should reach as many people as possible. Not everyone looks on Rabbit Rehome and you can bet most people don't even know about rabbit rehome. It doesn't mean that the normal Joe Public won't be good rabbit owners, just because they buy a rabbit from an advert in a newspaper.

I wouldn't rehome mine ever just as someone wouldn't rehome their children when life went :censored:- but if a Rescue I trusted couldn't take a foster or something I may rehome privately. I would do it on here, RR, or on freeads - but bun would be neutered/not listed as free & home would be homechecked.

I don't see why people think rehoming through RU is better than other ways, there are plenty of people on here who I would never rehome a rabbit to, it is the homechecks/ talking to the person that is the most important thing, no matter how they get in contact with you. It worries me that some people seem to think that if you are a member here you automatically are a good bunny owner and may not check it out before rehoming...

I agree - Free ads is no worse as long as you rehome a neutered bun & homecheck:D:D:D:D:D

I had a few enquires about a couple of the bunnies we rehomed from members on here and there was no way they were suitable homes as far as I was concerned

I sometimes get concerned about Rescues that offer to take buns in. Personally, I would only hand over buns to Rescues I had visited, Rescues run by friends, or ones trusted by someone I trusted. If that makes sense:D:D:D

Ok have read rest of thread now:oops:

I agree there are times when a terminal or degenerative illness may leave rehoming as the only option for the welfare of the buns. I say I would NEVER rehome, but I can understand why - in a multi-bun situation - especially with high maintenance buns (ie ill etc) rehoming may be necessary. If I had only a short-time to live, I would rehome sooner rather than later so I could see buns settled.

I totally agree with you, theres so many people on here i wouldnt trust my babies with :? The homecheck is definately the most important thing :)

Phew, I'm glad I'm not one of them. :lol::lol:

I was one of the people who put RU but I definitely wouldn't take membership on here to mean that homechecks/interview etc wouldn't need to be done. I would still carry out a full interrogation  beforehand, just as I would if I listed on RR to random strangers.

Likewise, if I ever offered to adopt a bun from somebody on here, then I wouldn't expect to get preferential treatment or skip the homecheck etc purely because of being a member on here.

as it stands, if it was debt, having children, getting another pet, i would never rehome,

terminal illness, having to move, id look after them as long as i was able to, and moving etc i would ask someone to help foster for a while,

id have to be on deaths door if i had to rehome, they are my chidren and i wouldnt want to part with them, if i had to it would be vetting and checking there new home with strict instructions,

the thought of doing so is scarey to me so until it happens im not thinking of it

I agree, there are different people on here with different motives, I know there is a breeder who eats his stock has/does use/d this forum (not sure how active he is) but, it is really important I think to homecheck and meet the people and ideally see the accomodation. :thumb:

A member...on here? :shock::(

I put only on RR, RU....but would never assume that they'd get a good home. I'd do it on here, because I'd be more likely to keep in contact (if the illness made it possible)....and would love it if a member on here took them.:)

Am I the only one wondering if I'm one of those who you'd never rehome to?

Yes I believe so:( Another good reason to neuter and vaccinate :)

Another thing to bear in mind of course is that different rescues have different criteria for rehoming and what one rescue may consider another may not

Oh Jane :( I've just read this whole thread and it's made me feel terribly sad so I can only begin to imagine how you must be feeling.

Firstly, if I was any where near you I would offer my help in a heartbeat. I'm a pro s*** shoveller ;) and I'm fit for purpose. I'd be there every day if I could, helping clean out and feed, and you could remain in charge of cuddles! With some help, you may be able to keep going for a lot longer than you may be able to currently. I'm seriously surprised that no one else has said anything similar so far.

And I haven't voted, I'm not sure what I'd do in such a situation. More than likely I'd cry a lot and my mum would end up sorting it out for me.

I think I'd probably advertise everywhere - living on an island, potential homes are limited but everyone reads the local paper so that would give me the best chance of finding local homes. I would home check and my buns are all neutered (except for Brian but he will be when he's old enough) so I would have no worries about breeders. I wouldn't give them to any of my family or friends. I do not know anyone who knows enough about rabbits to convince me they'd be a good owner. In fact, I know a lot of people who keep rabbits in bad conditions and would avoid them like the plague. I would think if I ever did have to rehome, it would take me a very long time to find the right place. If I had to rehome them as a matter of urgency, I'd see if I could find someone to foster them until I found the right homes, I couldn't just give them away willy nilly.

I've been thinking about this thread...and I honestly don't know what I'd do :(

In an ideal world, I'd never rehome any of my rabbits...but in reality if anything happened which meant I physically couldn't care for them for any length of time, then I'd have to rehome because there's nobody who would help out (not without being paid anyway!)...my OH and family don't really want to be bothered with them unfortunately :(

All the rabbits from reputable rescues would have to go back there, along with their partners...which would reduce numbers a little.

The young-ish, healthy rabbits would probably be rehomed via RU or via my vets...preferably reasonably locally.

The older or sick bunnies would either have to be put to sleep, or go to a handful of 'trusted' rabbit savvy people I've met over the years...if they were able to take them that is :?

My wildies would probably be best going to a specialist sanctuary/rescue, even if it meant that I had to pay for an enclosure to be built for them. They certainly couldn't go to a home with dogs or children anyway.

Food for thought, huh?
