  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Jack has dodgy teeth...

Took her to the vet today and they think she has the start of a molar spur and so her incisors are wearing unevenly... more money to shell out as I have to take her back in a couple of weeks to see if it gets any worse.

Is there ANYTHING I can do? I give them loads of hay but they hardly seem to touch it. I've tried putting it everywhere - litter tray, spread over the floor, in hanging balls, hay racks, even in a bowl - but they don't seem to eat much. They have 24hr access to rough grass and often nibble on brambles. They get hard extruded pellets once a day with veggies at night.

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? She's never had dental problems before even though she's a nethie and Im worried that it's my fault!

any advice is most welcome.

I very much doubt it's your fault. How much pellet feed do the Buns get? Are they getting too much other tastey food so they dont bother filling up on hay?
Have you tried them on lots of different hays and dried grasses ?
If you actually see Jack eating some hay that proves she can. So I'd weigh her then cut back on the 'tasties' for 4-5 days. Weigh her again and if her weight has remained stable that shows she is eating enough to maintain condition and you just have to be 'cruel to be kind' and force her to fill up on hay by limiting alternatives.
If, however, Jack is not eating any hay the above is not an option and you may be looking at the need for ongoing Dental treatment.
