Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Update on Kitt - she has abcesses =[

Hey all,

Well we took Kitt to see the vet this morning and the vet's said she has 2 abcesses - one on her ear - which is quite bad, and the other in between her leg and her bits. The vet thinks this will have come about when they had their little scrap.

I've been prescribed Baytril and to dilute it with pure orange juice - just administered the first lot and she hates it with a passion :(

I'm really worried about her, we're going to have to take her on a 4 hour journey next week as the vet said if she still has to continue her course of antibiotics she wont be able to give her her final vaccination... so only Jamie will be able to stay in Bunnyhops with Kayj

Are abcesses common in rabbits? Hawys is just cleaning the ear now

Orange juice is so sour I'm not suprised she hates it - try apple juice or ribena instead.

Baytril often doesn't touch an abscess as the rabbit walls it off from the blood supply. Your vet needs to get some of the pus on a swab and send it to a lab for analysis in order to find out which antibiotic will be effective - this costs around £30, but saves a lot of money and time wasted with baytril.

Abscesses need to have the pus scraped out of them and washed out daily, or as often as needed - what exactly did your vet do?

I have heard that if you clean it out thoroughly and put manuka honey in the cavity it stops the bacteria multiplying - manuka honey can be bought at holland and barrett.

Hopefully she'll be OK - rabbits can live with abscesses - the problems occur if it attaches to a bone, or if it goes deep inside and creates more abscesses around it.

I don't know anything about abcesses, (Thanks Elve..great new sig. BTW!) but I hope Kitt is going to be ok.
