  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

New Kit
hi, over easter one of my rabbit had a large abcess come up over a few days on the side of her face.. took her to the vets and she had an op to remove it, but as a large amount of the abcess was behind her eye they couldent remove it.. they have left the wound open so the absess can dran having to keep it open and washing it in hibi-scrub twice a day. she is also on baytril and eye drops for the swollen eye.. she been on this treatment for about 3 weeks, the vet did say to me that they do take a long time to get rid of and are very hard to treat,... im not getting much out of the absess anymore.. but there is no sign of the swelling behind her eye going... from my rabbit point of view she is a very good patient and will let me clean the absess. but starting to wonder weither it fair on her anymore she just doesen't shime happy anymore  and tends to spend most of the day huddled in a corner.. i did relise the other day that her frount teeth are a lil long and starting to grow sideways.. so could this be one of the reason she is so down not just the absess... she is eating.. but somethings like big pieces of veg she has trouble getting hold of.

any help you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated. thanks!!

Sorry, have no real experience of abcesses, but i hope you get some answers soon. Sending lots of snuggles to your bun.

she is surely in pain from her overgrown front teeth. Take her back to the vet and have all of her teeth looked at. I'm sure someone with experience of bunny dental problems will be along soon with some advice for you. Hope she improves.

I would ask your Vet to consider changing the systemic abx from Baytril to an INFECTABLE Penicillin. A culture grown from a swab taken from the abscess cavity may well reveal both aerobic and anaerobic micro-organisms. This would mean Baytril is INEFFECTIVE. Another more appropriate abx might be METRONIDAZOLE. But a culture and sensitivity test from a wound swab would reveal the type of bacteria involved and therefore the best abx to prescribe.
