  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

To give myyxi booster or not????

Hiya as many of u will now I had a dreadful time at the end of last eyar when my boys both got myxi, Honey had nodular myxi, very mild, only ever had 2 small lumps on his nose, but Harly had full blown and was touch and go for a long time (both had been vaccinated). They are due their boosters next month and I'm not sure if they should still get them or not? If they are immune to it now after having it? And if it could make it worse, make them ill again by reintroducing it to their bodies?

Floss had nodular myxi last Summer. Her face and body were covered in lumps and her right eye became inflammed and ulcerated. She recovered, though she has been left with a few lesions on her face and has lost about 20% vision in the eye due to the damge caused by the ulceration. Luckily she was fully up to date with her vaccinations otherwise the outcome would have been different. She has had her booster as I don't want to leave anything to chance. The vaccine is made from a harmless virus which produces antibodies in the rabbit which help to protect against the myxi strain, so there is no danger of a rabbit contracting myxi from the vaccine itself.
