  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Young Bun
i've taken in a foster/ rescue named simon. don't even ask the circumstances under which he was gotten.
he seems to have a bit of dry skin on his back (almost like eczema).
is there anything home remedyish i can do, or is the best bet a trip to the vet to rule out mites or something?

I would take him to the Vets as it sounds like Cheyletiella mites. As the Bun you have taken in sounds to have been neglected then he is probably 'run down' and this often leads to mites. He may have dental problems meaning he cant groom himself, or spinal pain (arthritis) Also, Cheyletiella are a vector for Myxomatosis which, sadly, is RIFE at the moment here in the UK.

he seems to be ours for the keeping for the time being... i just invested some $$ into a quality home for him as well as the appropriate bedding bottle and box... going on vacation next week, and when i get back ($$ allowing) it's off to the vet to make the bits go bye bye... the skin seems to be so so and not spreading, but going to see if i can still get him in and get it checked out. he's already starting to come out of his shell and want to socialize a bit....
thanks!
