  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Which is best....

To give first?

The Myxii vaccination or the VHD?

I've been thinking about it, b'cos when I used to help at the rescue, they always used to do VHD first but my vet does Myxii first :?

Maybe it depends on the perceived risk in the area, I reckon most vets to myxi first because there are a lot of obvious deaths from myxi, whereas VHD isn't seen so often (the fact that most buns probably die at home without ever getting as far as the vet is neither here nor there). Also, although VHD is more virulent (in that you can bring it home on your shoes etc), myxi is spread by flying insects so the transmission risk to your buns is probably higher.

Myxo can be given at 6 weeks, VHD not til 10 weeks. So thats why babes are given Myxo first.
If VHD has to be given before 10 weeks due to a confirmed outbreak it MUST be repeated THREE MONTHS later to ensure an adequate immune response. Thereafter VHD is given annually. With adult Buns I dont think it matters which one is given first as long as there is at least 14 days between vaccinations.

My buns had their myxi done first, I was told by one vet that they didn't need VHD jabs at all, so I had them done by another vet.

It may also be because reactions to VHD can be common, whereas Myxo reactions aren't so. So it may just be because if VHD was given first and the bun had a reaction he/she would not be able to have the myxo vacc straight after. (Although there should be a 2 week gap between the 2 vaccs anyway)
