Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore hocks - ongoing

Hello,

This is a topic that's been around a lot, I know but I was just wondering for those of you who have rabbits, with sore hocks - do they ever go away or do you find they flare up and down, never really getting much better.

This seems to the case with Foxy. Some days they are quite pale looking, and non puffy and other days they are very pink/red and puffy. We're on metacam twice a day.

Just wondering what everyone else is like. I'm doing all I can for a soft environment, and letting her out in a very large bunny pen which is again soft floored with a duvet, and mini toddler quilts for passing.
I then handpick her grass, clovers as going out on the grass doesn't help them at all.

Sore hocks can be a secondary symptom of another mobility problem such as arthritis. So it really depends on the exact situation for the individual Rabbit. Some cases of Sore Hocks can fully resolve with treatment/appropriate changes in husbandry. But some cases are chronic and can have periods of relapse and then some remission.

I expect you have already read a lot of the information available re Sore Hocks. But incase you have not or if anyone else is interested these links may be useful:

Hi there

If you search the Forum here, there are loads of good threads about sore hocks and what to do about them. It's good to read of other peoples' experiences, as sometimes vets just don't have the knowledge or experience to help sufficiently.

There are also a couple of really good creams I've found which help enormously with the problem. Others have found so too :D

I have also found, in my experience, that sore hocks can go away and never come back - there is hope :D

Thank you for the help, and advice. It's just very frustrating, and you feel responsible even though your doing everything you can, at any cost.

Is it better to let them exercise, or keep them rested up one day and out the next for example?

I'm thinking of them like humans here!!

Exercise is always beneficial (on a suitable substrate) as when moving about the effected area is almost always off the ground. It is when at rest that full weight bearing on the plantar region takes place :) Exercise will also aid weight control (being over-weight exacerbates sore hocks) and helps promote a good blood circulation (which is needed for all types of soft tissue healing).

You're welcome :)

Try not to feel too guilty, it really isn't anything you've done. I do find they come and go, and I personally wouldn't limit my rabbit's exercise. I would be careful not to run them on rough surfaces known to exacerbate the issue, but otherwise keep things stress free if you can. You know how our little ones pick up on our stress!

What cream would you use for dry skin, incase that's an irritant also? I've been using E45 from the vet, and intrasite gel.

Also, I used to use surcare to wash her bedding, quits etc which isn't perfumed, and now use ecover which is perfumed so I'm thinking that's helping to flare.

Oh and, in her hutch the floor is vet bed all over 7ftx3ft, and then a 13.5 tog covered duvet and then mini square 40x40cm quilts on top which are changed everyday, if messy. So very well padded in their.
When her run is attached, there is a 13.5 tog super king size duvet down, covering the patio or she goes in her actual run on the grass 8x8 under supervision.

I have used several types of topical treatment (under Veterinary advice) including Flamazine (a POM)
https://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/flamazine-cream-250g/prd-k08

Vetgold Cream

http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/VetGold-...zUKcAOCR0vOdMaxXY0omWrs15HkpNCdcw0aAoxQ8P8HAQ

Colloidal Silver Spray

http://www.aromesse.com/skin-problem/petnat-colloidal-silver-spray.html

I have not used this myself, but PaulJD on here was advised by a very Rabbit Savvy Vet to try SCP Spray

http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Derbymed-SCP-Spray-200ml/productinfo/DERBYMSCP/

It has apparently been very beneficial to his Rabbit 'Gandolf'. IME what works for one Rabbit may not work for others so it can be a case of trial and error. Always under guidance from a Vet of course :)

Intrasite gel is good, and I have that myself :D

If you get stuck, PM me for alternatives.
